Development of an application for accurate determination of renal function using population pharmacokinetic modelling

Measurements of kidney function is necessary for accurate diagnostics. Iohexol serum clearance has become the new gold standard but proves challenging when glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is low. Previously, 24-hour sampling was required for accurate results. Published research by Åsberg and colleagues has demonstrated that when employing a population pharmacokinetic model, a 4-point sample strategy from the initial 5 hours was sufficient to accurately determine measured GFR, even in patients with GFR < 40 ml/min .
However, there is currently a gap between research and clinical practice, as population pharmacokinetic models may be complex to develop and use. In order to provide physicians, pharmacists and researchers with the necessary tools to optimize patient treatment we sought to develop a free application serving as a simple interface to the developed model.
With funding from the Norwegian PhD School of Pharmacy, we have been able to meet all major milestones in our project. This includes developing load balancing for multiple instances of the application, allowing several concomitant users. Additionally, we have been able to further expose the application programming interface, which allows other developers to implement our application in their software. The server-side software has been greatly optimized, and the user receives the results within 10 seconds, allowing for fast measurements of kidney function. The application has been optimized for smartphones, allowing easy access from anywhere.
We are very grateful to the Norwegian PhD School of Pharmacy for the opportunity to develop an application with the intent to bridge the gap between research and practice, and hope it will be of good use to anyone in need of accurate, measured GFR.

Research Stay at the Pennsylvania State University, US

Report from Christina Bleis, UiT:

I had the opportunity to visit the renowned Center for Disease Dynamics (CIDD) at the Pennsylvania State University, US, from March 11th to December 1st 2020. Penn State is located in State College, a quiet and cozy town located in the heart of Pennsylvania. Penn State is a college town nicknamed Happy Valley. The leaves changing color in the fall was a sight in itself and the nature there was gorgeous.

I was so fortunate as to spend the research stay at Penn state, which is a top 25 research university with over 100,000 students. Penn State campus holds the famous statue of the Nittany Lion which is the official athletic symbol of Penn State.

The purpose of my stay was to investigate the acid tolerance response of enteric bacteria with a focus on the deadly pathogen Vibrio cholerae. I got the opportunity to investigate this working at CIDD at Penn State- a center which is part of the Huck Institutes aimed at interdisciplinary life sciences research. While at Penn State, I got to investigate how V. cholerae behaves in acidic conditions and to perform a global genetic screen. The research stay resulted in increased knowledge of V. cholerae virulence which will be the included in one of the papers for my PhD.

Due to the covid pandemic the number of social and cultural activities was quite scarce, unfortunately. Because of the covid restrictions, I also could not develop collaborations to the desired extent, although I quickly learned to be a pro at online meetings.
I have also received grant support from The National Graduate School in Infection Biology and Antimicrobials (IBA).

I would like to thank everyone at The Center for Disease Dynamics for making me feel welcome, and thank NFIF for making it possible.

Course report, during times of no travel, from PhD student Jónína Sæunn Guðmundsdóttir, UiT - The Arctic University of Norway.

Course: “Visualize your Science”, 4 ETCS credits.

Place: The course, which is usually held as a mixture of online modules and face-to-face sessions taking place at KTH in Stockholm and SLU in Uppsala, was adjusted to a fully online course this winter due to the ongoing pandemic. Making it possible for me to attend the course from Tromsø without having to make multiple trips to Sweden.

Lecturer: Andreas Dahlin, founder of Visualize Your Science AB.
Period: 03.11.2020 - 13.01.2021.

The “Visualize your Science” course is a very specific visualization course being offered as a PhD course in multiple Swedish universities. The course differs from many other visualization courses out there in the fact the teacher is a former assistant professor in analytical chemistry that has made a career out of assisting other researchers to improve their images and posters. The course was therefore completely focused on scientific illustrations, with projects ranging from drawing your favourite laboratory equipment to making graphical abstract of your PhD project and a conference poster to be presented for your fellow students.

The course includes detailed modules for the most commonly used software used, making it possible for you to work on improving your drawing skills in a software of your own choice. This I found very useful and have personally benefited greatly from it. I had used Adobe Illustrator previously, when working on drawing figures for my manuscript, but have in the course of the weeks the course took gone from making alright figures to making actually professional looking figures I know I will use for my presentations in the future. I have also gained multiple new skills when it comes to making a scientific poster, ranging from making beautiful pictures to us on it to gaining deeper knowledge on what makes an award-winning poster and how to make the most out of a poster presentation.

All in all, I am extremely thankful for the opportunity provided by NFIF to my participation in the course. I see it as a positive thing that the course went fully digital, as traveling back and forth internationally to attend the workshops would not have been a realistic option for me. The quality of the course materials and of the lectures provided far exceeded my expectations and I will be recommending the course to my fellow PhD students.

Congratulations to Elvira García de Jalón Viñegra from UiB!
Her presentation was awarded as “Best of New Tools for Cancer Imaging” at the 15th European Molecular Imaging Meeting.

Read Elvira García de Jalón Viñegra`s report:

In December 2019 I submitted an abstract of my work to the 15th European Molecular Imaging Meeting, a conference considered the most relevant in the field of Molecular Imaging. I got mixed feelings when I received the news that it had been accepted as a 10 minutes oral presentation. I was very happy that my hard work got recognized and also very anxious to be presenting it to the leaders of the field. But it was taking place in Thessaloniki, Greece, so I was very glad to exchange, at the end of March, rainy Bergen for the Mediterranean Sea and the highly missed sun. But the covid-19 pandemic arrived and the conference had to be postponed until August and ultimately transformed into a fully virtual meeting. It was not ideal, being so closed to the end of my PhD I thought this meeting would be a nice chance to look for new career opportunities, to do some networking and maybe even to establish new collaborations. And also, I would not be able to enjoy a nice Greek dinner accompanied by a glass of red wine.

But all in all, it was a nice new experience. I had to record myself giving the 10 minutes presentation, while clicking on the slides and at the same time trying to keep the eye contact on the camera. It was not easy! When you have the chance to repeat the takes, you want your presentation to be perfect. After many takes I decided that that was it, it was for sure not perfect but it looked natural and it was clear to understand the message, good enough! And it paid off. My presentation was awarded as “Best of New Tools for Cancer Imaging”. So just a big thank you to the School of Pharmacy (NFIF) for the travel grant that allowed me to present my work at EMIM 2020.

NFIF & NRSN Entrepreneurship Workshop

Report by Margherita Falavigna, UiT

I had the pleasure to attend the NFIF & NRSN Entrepreneurship Workshop in Oslo from the 14th to the 15th of September 2020.
The aim of the workshop was to equip the participants with tools and knowledge to innovate services for patients, create companies based on their research ideas, or bring their research ideas into existing companies. I felt very lucky to be able to participate to this workshop, as it was exactly what I was looking for to better understand the opportunities breaching out of the academic environment. This was especially important to me as I will soon be completing my PhD program. The workshop was very well structured, informative, and interactive, and gave a very good overview of how to go from a research idea to a business. In my opinion, this workshop should be followed by all PhD students, as it was able to clearly describe the alternatives to the academic career, and the opportunities of collaborations between universities and commercial companies. Moreover, this workshop allowed me to meet new researchers, and to build new networks for future collaborations.

This great experience would not have been possible without the support of NFIF, that granted me the possibility to participate to this inspiring workshop, which has improved both my professional and personal knowledge.

Pennsylvania State University - travel report from Antal Martinecz

I have spent the period between August 2019 and July 2020 at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in the US. This has been partially funded using travel grants from the IBA and NFIF PhD schools.

Penn State is located in a tiny university town called State College which is a remote place a couple hundred kilometers from the nearest big city. Even with my previous experience of living in a university town (Tromsø), many aspects of living there were unexpected and were often a pleasant surprise. Here, basically all services are aimed at people affiliated with the university. The extent of this is illustrated by the fact that even at local supermarkets such as Walmart, there is usually a large section where one can buy clothes and other things with the university’s or the university football team’s logo on it.

My PhD is on the mathematical modeling of antibiotic treatments. Specifically, I am interested in approaches that allow us to learn more from clinical trials and therefore better guide the design of subsequent clinical trials. As a result, my work requires me to be familiar with and connect multiple fields of research (medicine, microbiology, mathematics, epidemiology). Therefor,e being part of the Centre of Infectious Disease Dynamics (CIDD) Penn State was hugely beneficial for my work. CIDD houses groups from different departments and faculties in order to facilitate better collaboration between us. The mixing of groups were further encouraged by intentionally seating people from different groups into the same offices. This has been a great experience, as it exposed me to ideas and researches to other related fields that helped me to gain some perspectives on my own research. Among other benefits, having these interactions taught me how to explain my research in a way that can be understood by other researchers that are not close to my field. Being able to do so made writing my PhD thesis and manuscripts so much easier. Finally, at CIDD we had regular department-wide meetings and presentations 2-3 times a week on various research-related topics either by invited speakers or P*s within the department. This allowed me to learn more about works within my field, as well as the types of problems there are and how they are solved in fields loosely related to mine.

In addition to having one of the best infectious disease departments in the US (among other great departments), the university has the informal reputation of being one of the best party universities. This does not mean that there are constant wild parties, it simply means that the campus life is vibrant. There are many social events and other activities throughout the year catering to students and staff allowing everyone to have a satisfying social life in addition to their studies and work.

Having a great community at the department also meant that I could make many new friends and form new connections. The department encouraged this further by organizing weekly coffee mornings and other regular informal events where we could chat and get to know our colleagues outside the context of work.

This travel report would not be complete without mentioning COVID-19. The department and the university went into a lockdown from early March and as a result, I have spent my last four months within in my apartment. It has been quite manageable as the university is surrounded by nature so I could always go for a run or a walk. Furthermore, online services such as food delivery, shopping and grocery delivery options are abundant. Therefore I could slowly assemble a home office and get back to work slowly and quickly regain a sense of normalcy in my life. Finally, in the US, therapy is also very common and readily available currently in the form of online sessions due to the pandemic. As a result, I have been able to weather the pandemic and lockdown without anxieties or adverse effects on my mental health. This even included being able to easily prepare for and defend my PhD remotely in the beginning of June.
