This may be a little bit nerdy, but I am obsessed listening to people’s spoken voices. Is it just me?
🎤 Our speaking voice is the foundation of our singing voice and yet often singers never pay attention to it!
If you speak in a tight, pressed way, that tension follows you into songs or public speaking. If you speak too quietly, there may be several physical and mental reasons why. If a singer finds it difficult to access vocal power when they need it, there can be subtle clues in the way that they speak.
Just last week, I noticed my neighbors excellent sound production and breathing support. Funily enough, they had never had any vocal training, but all the raw elements for being a great singer were there!
So, how do YOU speak? Are you breathy? Do you tend to stick around a small range? Do you have any areas of tension when you feel like you are not loud enough? Does your voice ever sound or feel pressed? Do you drop off at the end of sentences?
Awareness is step one. And it's completely free. 😄
