Update 👶💛
In Rigachikun, Nigeria, zero cases of neonatal jaundice were reported over a 10-month period. This does not mean babies were not affected. It means jaundice was not being detected, highlighting the need for improved awareness and screening capacity.
Although 60–80% of newborns develop jaundice worldwide, limited awareness and lack of screening tools mean many babies in this region may go unidentified and without follow-up care.
Picterus Newborn Health is launching a pilot feasibility project in partnership with Aishatu Dammu Memorial Hospital in Kaduna State to strengthen early identification and management of neonatal jaundice in the community.
Through this initiative, we will:
🎓 Train healthcare workers in neonatal jaundice identification and management
📱 Introduce objective screening using the Picterus® Jaundice Pro app
📣 Strengthen community awareness about neonatal jaundice
🤝 Improve access to treatment through the donation of a phototherapy unit
This project will evaluate how digital screening can be integrated into routine newborn care while building sustainable local capacity that lasts beyond the project period.
Each step brings us closer to a future where every newborn has access to early screening and the opportunity for a healthy start. 💛
We look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses.
With special thanks to Dr. Sadiya Halima Gumi and the hospital team for their engagement and support and to our partner for donating the phototherapy unit.
