Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease seen in premature babies where the retinal blood vessels stop developing normally after birth.
Due to prematurity and oxygen exposure, abnormal new vessels grow, which can scar the retina and cause detachment, leading to blindness. It mainly affects babies born before 32 weeks or weighing less than 1500 g. Early stages may resolve on their own, but severe cases need laser therapy or anti-VEGF injections.
Regular screening in at-risk infants is essential to prevent vision loss.

Vitamin D Deficiency Increases Risk of Dry Eye Disease
In a large study encompassing more than 10 million patients, these individuals were approximately 30% more likely to be affected.

The researchers concluded in their ARVO abstract that โ€œidentifying and addressing vitamin D deficiency could lead to appropriately managing and potentially preventing dry eye syndrome.โ€

Fish Oil Doesnโ€™t Lower AMD Risk
ARVO study shows lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking can have a bigger impact on eye health than omega-3 fatty acids.

Over 64,000 US veterans aged 55 and older were followed, with most patients being male (95.7%) and white (79.2%). About half took fish oil supplements (32,499 patients) and the other half (32,318) did not. Of these, 7.3% patients with fish oil exposure and 7.4% patients without fish oil exposure were diagnosed with AMD. Given this lack of a meaningfull difference in the number of new AMD cases between the two groups following 10 years of fish oil use, the authors concluded that taking fish oil supplements did not seem to lower the risk of developing AMD.

Hyperopes at a Lower Risk for Cataracts
Only one genetic variant in hyperopic cases was identified as a causal link between refractive and lens conditions.

โ€œOur current findings indicate that hyperopia is a protective factor for age-related cataracts and cataract surgery, suggesting that increased levels of hyperopia may reduce the risk of age-related nuclear cataracts,โ€ reported the researchers in their paper published in Medicine. โ€œIn this study, we found that higher levels of hyperopia were associated with a lower risk of senile nuclear cataracts, but that the level of hyperopia did not have a significant effect on the risk of early senile cataracts.โ€ The relative lack of effective genetic associations for early age-related cataracts may explain the latter finding.
