The umbilicus, a.k.a., the belly button.
After a baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, but don't worry, there are no nerves, so there is no pain for mom or baby.

What you do need to be concerned about is keeping the cord stump clean and dry.

Just leave it alone, protect it from getting pulled on, (or peed on). No liquids, oils, or even alcohol and in about a week or two, it will fall off.

If you notice it looking swollen, red, smelling bad, or oozing blood or pus, then clean around it with mild soap and water, let it dry, and call your doctor if it doesn't improve or your baby develops a fever.

There are many ways to help maintain (and even improve) your milk supply, but here are some of our favorite tips to use!

1. Babies have small stomachs, so they take small amounts often. Pay attention to their feeding cues to keep up with their nutritional needs.
2. Prolactin is a hormone that stimulates milk production, and it's highest at night, so find a rhythm that works for you and your baby to breastfeed around the clock.
3. Breastfeeding burns calories (500-700 a day)! Be sure to fuel your body well and have other people help you so that you can focus on recovery and taking care of your baby.
4. Pain leads to stress, which hinders milk production. Be sure to achieve a good latch that allows you to feel comfortable to go as long as your baby wants to nurse. This helps encourage your baby to stay alert and gives your baby the best opportunity for good milk transfer.

Getting uninterrupted sleep with a newborn is not a realistic goal, but ensuring they have a safe sleep environment where everyone gets some rest is achievable!

Research from around the world was evaluated to determine sleeping practices that help keep infants safe.

The top 3 factors were:
🌟 Laying the baby on their back to sleep.
🌟 Practicing bed sharing where the infant has a designated place for him/herself, that is free of loose blankets, pillows, and other objects.
🌟 Rooming-in with the mom to facilitate easy breastfeeding, which keeps the mom more tuned into the babies' rhythms like breathing, movements, and crying.

Can you spot the differences?
Safe sleep is a big deal!
Newborns can't roll and sometimes forget to breathe, so it is very important to ensure they have a safe place to sleep.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that newborns sleep on their backs, on a firm surface, free of objects that could cover their face, and in a designated place just for them to use. They also recommend breastfeeding to prevent SIDS and SUIDS! To learn more, check out https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/safe-sleep/?srsltid=AfmBOoquXU4prXeV_rkCvSR-72zcsK5gBB-kY2FbvOCe89M1QRB4hcxB

Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue (usually only on one side) BUT it is not contagious! It is important to keep breastfeeding or at least taking milk out as normal (every 2 to 3 hours). Sometimes just hygienic and regular breastfeeding help you get past the trouble, and sometimes you need to take an antibiotic to help you get better quickly (don't worry, you can usually keep breastfeeding while taking antibiotics) just check with your doctor first.
