Skin grafting is a procedure where transplantation of skin is done to cover large defects in the skin. It is used to treat conditions where there is a loss of skin due to extensive wound or trauma, burns, infections (like necrotizing fasciitis), or after removal of large skin cancers. Such grafts can be split-thickness or full-thickness skin grafts. A split-thickness skin graft (STSG) is a skin graft including the epidermis and part of the dermis. A full-thickness graft consists of the epidermis and the entire thickness of the dermis. The skin grafts do not have its own blood supply, it vascularizes from the surface on which it resides.

SKIN FLAPS on the other hand consists of one or more tissue components including skin, deeper subcutaneous tissues, muscle, etc, and has its own blood supply.
