A two-day capacity-building training was successfully conducted in Kaski District for parents engaged in the education of children with deafblindness through the resource class and home-based programs.
During the training, discussions were held on the roles of parents and teachers in the care and support of children, the preparation of Individual Educational Plans (IEP), and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR).
Similarly, the parents formed a Parents’ Network of Kaski District, led by active parents. The network has decided to initiate various activities to promote quality education for children with deafblindness. These include submitting proposals to different authorities to purchase a vehicle to facilitate transportation for the children, and conducting advocacy visits to Pokhara Metropolitan City for therapy services and the construction of a resource center building.

Happy International youth Day

Happy . In honour of this year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond”, we wanted to highlight the incredible work of Nepal’s Deafblind Youth Network.

For several years, Sense International has been working with Deafblind Associations in Nepal who identify young people with deafblindness, advocate for their inclusion in education, and train them in advocacy and disability rights. Now, these young people are leading change for themselves.

One of those people is Rekha, President of the Deafblind Association Nepal‘s Rupandehi Branch. Rekha’s sight and hearing both began to decline at the age of 11; teachers and classmates didn’t understand her needs and she was shunned from education. Despite setbacks, Rekha was determined to stay connected; she learned Nepali sign language, lip-reading, and continued to teach herself skills through Youtube videos.

Rekha developed confidence as she engaged with the Deafblind Association and disability rights networks. Now she works to lead and represent other young people with deafblindness across national and international platforms, advocating for inclusive policies, whilst running a sewing business and a social media channel.

Rekha’s story is a symbol of the growing leadership among youth with deafblindness in Nepal. With the right support, recognition, and tools, they are not just surviving but leading—and transforming the narrative for the entire deafblind community."

Children with deafblindness and deaf celebrating Rakshya Bandhan in the Deafblind Resource Class in Morang.
Rakshya Bandhan is a traditional Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a Rakhi (decorative thread) on their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing love, protection, and mutual respect. The celebration in the resource class brought smiles, inclusion, and joy, highlighting the spirit of togetherness among all children.

Nepal work features in sense international social media ...

Imagine if you couldn’t tell the world how you felt, what you needed, or who you were.

Fifteen-year old Shine from Kathmandu was born with congenital deafblindness, leaving him isolated in a world that couldn’t connect with him. With little ability to express his needs, Shine behaved aggressively, and his family felt lost.

With the support of Sense International and our lead partner in National Federation of the Deaf Nepal, Shine has been able to receive therapy, inclusive education, and engage in sensory play provided by the Society of Deafblind Parents. He learns foundational skills and mobility exercises, helping him to navigate his environment and develop independence, and has begun walking with a cane.

With a new ability to communicate and express himself, Shine is calmer and more receptive to learning; with his educator he is learning braille and tactile sign language, opening up a new world of possibilities to connect with others and express who he is.
