Every mother has her ups and downs when it comes to parenting. One minute your child might seem like a little angel, calmly sleeping in their crib, while another they may seem like the devil incarnate, throwing tantrums and testing the limits of your patience. *** Update: I've learned that Jabina Coleman IBCLC was the person who coined the quote pictured here. Unfortunately, Facebook isn't letting me tag them, but I wanted to give them credit. ***

The day I had my cesarean, a family member visited me in the hospital. As she entered my room, she walked right past me and directly to my baby. I felt invisible. I needed love in that moment. I was at the beginning of what would be a long struggle post-partum and I needed to be seen.

It takes a village to raise a child, but also to raise a mother. Motherhood is sometimes scary, overwhelming, lonely, tiring, exhausting and oh so hard. We need a village. People who can give us support, make us laugh, love us, telling us they've been there, giving us a smile - someone who holds us, the mothers. Be in that village, just like you need other moms, you need to be there for other moms too. ❤️

Feeling so humbled and grateful today. Just wanted to share my happy news: I’ve been added to the BC Aboriginal Association of Friendship Centres approved doula list!

Doula support is so valuable, providing emotional and physical support to women before and during labour and birth. I truly believe all women would benefit from having this support, and I’m so grateful for how this grant opens up this possibility for many!

From the BCAAFC website: “The BCAAFC and First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) are proud to jointly offer funding to cover the costs of birth doula and postpartum doula services for pregnant Aboriginal mothers and families, living in BC (both on and off reserve). This partnership works towards bringing birth closer to home and back into the hands of women.”

As always, I’m honoured to be on this path supporting women, their families and their precious babies. If you know anyone in Vancouver who is looking for accessible and caring birth doula support, please feel free to share 💛❤️🙏☺️

An overview of frequently asked questions about the program and the family registration form can be found on BCAAFC’s website at: http://www.bcaafc.com/index.php/initiatives/doula-support-program.

Sharing in a miracle...

My journey towards the world of birth began when I became a mother myself in 2013. The arrival of our four children over the past six years has impressed on me the true wonder of birth and new life. When the time felt right, I began walking along this doula path. It has been a joy-full experience so far; one that allows me to share in this miracle of life again and again.

My doula path so far:

  • DONA International Birth Doula Workshop, Vancouver, BC, January 2018

  • Office volunteer at a busy midwifery clinic, Vancouver, BC, January - June 2018
