Johnson and Johnson's baby powder will soon be history as it causes cancer?
The company will stop selling its baby talcum powder in 2023. However, the brand will be reborn as they plan to bring corn-starch-based powder into the market. In a report by Reuters, Johnson and Johnson has over 38,000 lawsuits that claim its talc products to be carcinogenic due to contamination with asbestos minerals.
The company issued a statement that said this move came while they "continued to evaluate and optimize" their portfolio of products. It adds:
The more surprising though is why a top brand like Johnson and Johnson's got discontinued in countries like the United States of America and Canada.
Talcum powder has been used for a long time in baby products due to the mineral having the ability to keep skin dry and prevent diaper rash. However, the mines that produce the powder also can cause asbestos, a mineral used once in products such as building insulation that scientists have linked to cancers often.
Numerous consumer companies have also found corn starch can offer similar benefits of talc without the risk of asbestos.
“Our position on the safety of our cosmetic talc remains unchanged. We stand firmly behind the decades of independent scientific analysis by medical experts around the world that confirms talc-based Johnson's Baby Powder is safe, does not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer," said a statement from the company.
