Bit of a funny to make you giggle 🤭 is this you?

But in seriousness, you don’t need to have the perfect explanation of what’s going on in your body. Use the analogies and descriptions that might sound mad, we have probably heard them before.

It’s our job! Bring us the messy, confusing symptoms 🧐 We will help you make sense of it and get you moving better āœØšŸ™ŒšŸ»

The history of therapeutic massage in New Zealand!

Fair warning: I am not a professional actor or content creator 🫣 But the story of how therapeutic / remedial / clinical massage evolved in Aotearoa is actually pretty fascinating.

From mirimiri practiced by tohunga, to the Tohunga Suppression Act, to massage being illegal for non-physiotherapists for decades… the profession has had a surprisingly complicated journey.

So yes, the reel might be awkward.
But the history? Worth knowing.

Some people start the weekend at the pub. Others start it on the massage table fixing the damage from the week.

Either way… cheers to that. šŸ‘šŸ»

Club rugby season is here, and we’re excited to have Mia supporting the Napier Marist Premiers this year.

Mia will be working alongside the physio team from CAPE Physio to help keep the boys moving well throughout the season. From recovery support to managing the physical demands of a long rugby season, it’s always great to see massage therapy playing a role in athlete care.

We love being involved with local sport and supporting the people who give so much to their clubs and communities.

Good luck to the Marist Premiers for the season ahead. šŸ‰

There could be a full-blown production happening outside the treatment room.

A door slams.
Someone laughs too loud.
A child is racing around like a speedway car.
The kettle decides it’s auditioning for MasterChef.

Me: ā€œSo sorry about that noise.ā€
Client:
…snoring softly.
…has left their body.
…currently on a beach somewhere in their subconscious.

And I’m standing there like ???
Did you not hear the mild circus that just happened??

But honestly, once you’re melted into the table and your nervous system has clocked off for the day, the outside world becomes background music.

Mia and I spent the weekend in Hamilton levelling up our hands (and forearms… literally).

We trained with Brian Utting from the US, diving into advanced lower body, hand and forearm techniques ✨ Refining pressure, precision and how we access tissue without just ā€œgoing harder.ā€

We’re big believers that good therapists never stop learning. The more we understand the body, the better we can assess, treat and create real change for our clients. Ongoing education isn’t optional for us, it’s part of the standard.

Our brains are full. Our hands are sharper. And we’re very excited to start integrating some of these techniques into clinic.

Client-focused care means progress, re-evaluation, and a plan. Not an endless cycle of ā€œsee you next week.ā€

If your practitioner makes you feel fragile, broken, or like you’ll fall apart doing certain movements or without weekly hands-on work… that’s not empowerment. That’s a business model.

My job isn’t to keep you coming back forever.
My job is to assess, treat when appropriate, educate, and help you build capacity so your body feels capable, not fragile.

Sometimes that includes massage.
Sometimes that includes strength.
Sometimes that includes referring out.

You deserve to understand your body. Not fear it.

Loving being in pain during a massage is not a flex.
It gives me the ick. I said what I said.

ā€œDeep tissueā€ doesn’t mean brutal, and pain doesn’t equal effective treatment. You can access deep layers of tissue without hurting someone and in many cases, too much pain just sends the nervous system into full ā€œnopeā€ mode. If you’re clawing on the table getting through a massage, just remember guarded tissue doesn’t fully release…

Effective work feels intentional, safe, and specific not like you survived something.
Your body isn’t impressed by suffering, sorry šŸ’… So let’s throw ā€œno pain, no gain outā€ the window.

✨ Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish. ✨
It’s maintenance.
It’s regulation.
It’s you keeping the wheels on so you don’t run on empty.

Each session is guided by education, clinical training, and ongoing learning šŸ¤“ not routines or guesswork.
We assess, listen, adapt, and choose techniques based on your body, your history, and your goals.

Yes, it can feel relaxing.
Yes, it can feel restorative.
But underneath that is a strong foundation of anatomy, physiology, and clinical reasoning.

Because when you understand the body, you can work with it and not just on it.
