Shared values of responding to the needs of their clients at a difficult time, giving back to their local community and creating unique memorable celebrations, has led to a ‘perfect match’ between Central Otago’s leading funeral directors Affinity and the region’s oldest family-run funeral business Campbell & Sons in Mosgiel. Affinity was started in 2009 by friends and Alexandra locals Janice Millis and Lynley Claridge after the death of seven close family members prompted Lynley to think about setting up the business. The merger began in 2020 with both businesses learning from each other and coming together with a goal to provide the best standard of funeral care across Otago. This has included upskilling staff, with additional training in best practices, hiring new people, streamlining administration, including centralising design and printing, and upgrading Affinity’s venue, The Cellar Door.

WALKER, Glenys Margaret 20.10.1944 – 18.02.2026
Peacefully, at Maniototo Hospital, Ranfurly, following a courageous three-year battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Glenys faced her journey with strength, dignity, and grace.

Beloved and cherished wife of Jim Walker (Ranfurly), much loved and respected mother of Suzanne, and James Walker (Ranfurly), treasured grandmother of Jason and Jessica Rosie (Dunedin), Steph and Travis Peters (Oamaru), Ellie Walker (Winton), and Jayden and Zac Walker (Christchurch), adored great-grandmother of Jackson, Joel and Jordan Rosie, and Toby and Neve Peters. Loved sister and sister-in-law of Joy Fraser* and Alma Kitto*; Ken Mason (Ranfurly) and Jeanette Mason*; Dawn Graham*; Bonnie and Colin Smith (Ranfurly); and Ewan Mason and Heather Kinley (Ranfurly). Special thanks to the caring nursing team, and Dr Verne Smith at Maniototo Hospital, Otago Community Hospice, Maniototo Pharmacy, St John’s Ambulance and MND NZ for their compassion and support.

COUSENS, Emma Kathryn (nee Gardner)

Emma passed peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, after a brave fight, aged 45 years.

Loving wife of Mark and devoted mother to Sophie, beloved daughter of John and Paddy Gardner, and sister of Andy and Dave Gardner, much loved sister-in-law to Steph, Jackie and Abbey, loving Auntie to Paige, Evie and Delilah, and loving daughter-in-law to Pauline.

‘We will miss you terribly, your kind heart and your cheeky smile’.

The family wish to acknowledge the tremendous support and compassion shown by the staff at Aspiring Care in Wanaka, during Emma’s final days.

Died peacefully at home; aged 88 years.

Much loved husband of Penny, father and father in-law of Graham and Dianne, Karen and Tony, Jan and Jerome and Grant. Grandfather of Becky, Dean and Emma, Ben and Georgia; Ashleigh and Michael, Matthew and Sara, Shaun and Isobel; Jacqui and Aaron, Samara and Kyle, Nathan and Lucy. Great-grandfather of Alfie and Ida.

A celebration of Lionel’s life will be held in the Poolburn Moa-Creek Memorial Hall at 1.00pm, on Monday February 9, 2026. Followed by Lionel taking up residence in his lifestyle block in the Drybread Cemetery. All welcome.

A service to celebrate James' life will be held at the Omakau Rugby Clubrooms, at 11.00am, on Monday, January 26, followed by burial at the Drybread Cemetery.

Our dearly loved husband, father, father-in law, grandfather, and forever friend entered his eternal rest on 9 January 2026, at Dunstan Hospital. Les will be greatly missed by all those who knew him and whose lives he touched.

A dearly loved husband to Carol, loved father and father-in-law to Craig and Leanne, Jodie and Stephen, Bruce and Anna, Blair and Anna, Shelley and Rhys. Much loved grandfather to Rachael, Malachi, William, Emily, Lily, Phoebe, Olly, Ruby, Ben, Sam, Sophie, Joseph, Timothy, Olivia, Fabian, Anneke, Baxter, Ingrid, Archer, Gemma and beautiful baby-to-be.

The family wish to extend their sincere and heartfelt thanks to the specialists at Dunedin Hospital as well as the exceptional staff at Dunstan Hospital for their outstanding care, compassion, and kindness towards Les and his family.

SHAND, Kathryn (Kath) Lesley
From having a wine on the deck one day, to leaving this world the next, we are heartbroken to announce that our darling mum has passed away in the wee hours of the 8th of January, 2026.

Stephen, Lisa, Angee and Dani were by her side as she slipped peacefully away to join her beloved Eddie. While they are deeply saddened, they and their wider whānau including Sio, Steve, Bruce, CJ, Seren, and JP, are relieved that she hasn’t suffered longer than she needed to. Mum would have loved it if her “boarding school kids” (Tina, Jackie and Tony) were there but this took us all by surprise, including Aunty Kath.

Our Mum was very clear in her wishes, so we have arranged a private farewell. We invite you to raise a glass to Kath (and perhaps make a donation to Central Otago Community Hospice) in the days ahead. We would like to thank the beautiful souls who have been with us through this journey, from Health Central, Otago Community Hospice and most recently Dunstan Hospital. Mum also appreciated the care of her surgical teams in Dunedin and Christchurch, along with the everyday care of Katya, Abby and the rest of the team.
