Great to attend Athletics New Zealand’s Coaching Masterclass with James Mortimer today — a preliminary event for the Sir Graeme Douglas International, part of the Summer Circuit series across the motu.
James has earned a reputation as New Zealand’s premier sprint coach. A former national 200m and 400m champion and Commonwealth Games athlete himself, he brings both elite performance experience and over a decade of high-performance coaching expertise.
James has coached world-class athletes including Zoe Hobbs, New Zealand’s first female 100m sub-11-second sprinter, Paralympic double gold medallist Liam Malone, and World Champion Beach Sprinter Brianna Irving. Across his career, he has guided multiple athletes to national championships and World Championship representation.
His insights into developing speed across a training block incorporating progression in isometric, concentric, eccentric based movements preparing athletes for competition were incredibly valuable.
Opportunities like this reinforce the importance of collaboration and ongoing learning between coaches, performance staff, and clinicians to better support athlete development and performance.
Many thanks to Kirsten Hellier for organising the event.
The meet kicks off from 2:30PM with the main programme from 4:00PM
