One of the most common things women tell me is:⁠

But metabolism isn’t just about how fast you burn calories.⁠

How well your body turns food into usable energy⁠

How steadily it regulates blood sugar⁠

How well it maintains muscle⁠

Metabolism responds to the environment you give it:⁠
Sleep. Stress. Nutrition. Muscle.⁠

A client said this to me recently:⁠

“I wake up around 3 am most nights and my brain just switches on.”⁠

She thought it was just stress.⁠

But when we zoomed out, we could see a bigger pattern.⁠

Her blood sugar wasn’t very steady during the day⁠

And cortisol was likely a little higher overnight⁠

Both of these can disrupt deep sleep.⁠

When sleep breaks, blood sugar tends to be less stable the next day—then the cycle continues.⁠

Sleep affects metabolism.⁠
Metabolism affects hormones.⁠
Hormones affect sleep.⁠

Round and round we go.⁠

Which is why I don’t jump straight to supplements.⁠
Sometimes the real issue is the pattern underneath.⁠

Something I see a lot with women in their 40s is this:⁠

They’re exercising more than ever…⁠
but their energy keeps dropping.⁠

Often, they assume they just need to push harder.⁠

But not all exercise supports the body in the same way.⁠

If your energy is already low and most of your training is high intensity or long sessions, it can start to feel like you’re chasing energy rather than rebuilding it.⁠

The body adapts to what it’s asked to do.⁠
If it’s constantly pushed hard with very little recovery, you can end up feeling more drained instead of stronger.⁠

This is where the type of movement matters:⁠

Strength training builds muscle⁠

Walking helps regulate the nervous system⁠

Shorter sessions restore capacity without adding stress⁠

There are seasons to push…⁠
and seasons to support the body gently.⁠

If your training is leaving you more tired than stronger, it might be time to adjust the load.⁠
