Phovia®: The Facts 🌈

Calcinosis cutis is a skin condition where mineral salts are deposited in the skin and one major cause is iatrogenic hypercortisolism.

Secondary (superficial or deep) bacterial skin infection can occur, requiring, in addition to the management of the underlying diseases, appropriate antimicrobial treatment.

This study reports the effect of Fluorescent Light Energy (FLE) to manage pyoderma associated with calcinosis cutis plaques in a dog.

Phovia®: The Facts 🌈

Wound healing is a complex biological process comprised of a series of sequential events aiming to repair injured tissue.

It starts immediately after injury and it requires a synchronized interplay among cells, growth factors, and extracellular matrix proteins. Multiple causes influence this process, including blood supply, defect size, tension, mobility, susceptibility to infection, type of wound and condition of the underlying tissue. Excessive, continuous, and chronic inflammation may affect healing and prevent morphofunctional normality, resulting instead in the formation of disoriented connective tissue.

This abnormal architecture reduces mechanical strength of tissues and leads to scar formation.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Fluorescent Light Energy (FLE) on the healing of cutaneous incisional wounds. Read more here https://bit.ly/3oAChvF

Phovia®: The Facts🌈

Canine interdigital pyoderma (CIP) is a chronic inflammatory skin problem affecting interdigital spaces, footpads and nail folds or combinations thereof. The condition is a complex, multifaceted disease and it is frustrating both to diagnose the underlying disease and institute appropriate therapy. It is associated with allergy (atopic dermatitis, cutaneous adverse food reaction),
ectoparasites (Demodex canis), endocrine disease (hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism), foreign bodies and conformational problems. Secondary infection is a common sequela to the underlying disease. Localized areas of folliculitis can progress to furunculosis leading to a significant foreign body reaction due to the release of keratin into the skin with the formation of fistulae and draining tracts.

Phovia®: Mode of Action 🌈

Phovia® is a novel way to manipulate the function of cells within the dermis and epidermis, to reduce inflammation but still accelerate regeneration.

It is a two-part system , comprising a LED lamp and a chromophore gel, used together, they produce multi-wavelength fluorescent light energy that can pe*****te the skin to variable depths. Unlike other systems, Phovia® is capable of triggering different beneficial responses at different levels.

Phovia® : The Facts 🌈

Canine pyoderma is one of the most common diseases presented to veterinarians in small animal practice requiring long-term antibiotic use, depending on the depth of the infection. It is now well accepted by the international scientific community that long-term antibiotic use (more than 5 weeks) carries a high-risk factor for the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria; thus, treatment protocols that reduce the systemic antibiotic treatment duration are desirable.

Managing canine pyoderma is becoming more difficult due to the presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) staphylococci which are progressively encountered by veterinary practitioners, especially in dermatologic area Antimicrobial options for the treatment of multi drug resistant (MDR) pyoderma are often limited and topical therapy could be the sole treatment.

Veterinary professionals know that long courses of antimicrobials can be difficult for pets and their owners. It’s hard to get a pet to take an antimicrobial treatment even for a short period of time!

Phovia® offers an alternative that has a shorter treatment window and less side-effects than antimicrobials. You can also be sure treatment has been administered correctly, since it is happening in your own clinic, and the pet owner is relieved of the stress of administering treatment themselves at home.
