πβ¨ Yoga and Mindfulness for Children: Breathing with Imagination β¨π
During yoga sessions with children with I have been using a special breathing ball. The ball expands and softens, just like our bellies as we breathe in and out. Itβs a simple but powerful way for children to see and feel their breath.
As we inhale, the ball slowly expands. As we exhale, it gently closes. We use this movement to guide our breathing in for 5, out for 5, sometimes adding music or stories to make the experience even more magical. π΅
Through imagination, the breathing ball becomes many things:
βοΈ Rainbow clouds that rise and fall in the sky
π‘ A puffer fish that inflates and deflates with each breath
π A hot air balloon drifting up and down with the wind
We explore different types of breath work: slow inhales, quick exhales, holding the breath, and counting together. Each variation helps children learn how to calm their bodies, focus their minds, and regulate their emotions.
We also love flower breathing πΈ using scents like lavender or mint. Children breathe in the lovely aroma and then exhale softly, feeling peaceful and grounded.
Every session is built around storytelling and imagination journeys through the jungle, under the sea, or up in the clouds, helping children connect with yoga and mindfulness in a fun, creative way.
Iβm a qualified Primary and Early Childhood Teacher, Yoga teacher, and Pilates instructor with years of experience. Over time, Iβve developed my own program that combines movement, breath, and imagination to support childrenβs wellbeing.
If youβre interested in introducing this program to your center, family, or community, keep an eye out for my upcoming family yoga pop-up events designed especially for children aged 3 to 10 (and a little older too!). πΏ
β¨ Letβs breathe, move, and imagine together. β¨
