The past three months have been full — rich, rewarding, and really meaningful. The summer tai chi programme in Cornwall Park has been a joy. So many people, so many shared moments, and such a privilege to pass on the wonder that is tai chi.

And yet… as March drew to a close, I felt a longing for stillness.

Today, I answered that call. I decided I would spend quiet time in nature and make some earth art (designs and patterns using petals, leaves, seeds and twigs that the trees have released onto the ground).

However, when I set out to forage for my earth art materials, I felt tired… and everything looked a bit drab. Everywhere I turned, there seemed to be only brown, dead leaves. I almost gave up.

But then I told myself, “Just pick up one thing.” And there it was — a single bright yellow leaf.

That one small moment shifted something and I began to see more colour: reds, golds, pinky purples, russets, soft greens — all there, waiting for me to notice.

The earth art I created was amazingly bright and colourful.

Sometimes, it only takes one small step — one leaf — to begin seeing the world differently again.

I am very grateful for the fullness of these past months… and equally grateful for these moments to rest and reflect.

That's a wrap for summer tai chi in Cornwall Park. It's been an amazing season with 1,066 participants spread over 19 sessions, plus another 12 participants, who attended specially-designed, accessible sessions for anyone who was blind or had low vision.

I asked participants tonight for a few words to sum up their tai chi experience in the park. This is what many said: 'calming', 'relaxing but also energising', 'lovely gentle and flowing movements', 'being at one with nature', 'feeling at peace', 'my body loves tai chi'; 'it's good for my brain'; 'feeling stronger', 'absolutely loved it', 'being in the fresh air in this beautiful park'. One participant said it had helped his recovery after his back surgery (last year) and that he was now in far less pain.

A huge thank you to Barry and Pauline as co-instructors, and to all of you who came along, brought family and friends and kept returning week after week.

Lastly, the biggest thank you of all to the management and events team at Cornwall Park who made it possible for everyone to attend for FREE.

I will miss you all and look forward to seeing you again next summer.

Wow… what a day tai chi whānau!
Today, we didn’t just gather in Cornwall Park—we made history. We broke our all-time attendance record for summer tai chi. This year, we surpassed an incredible milestone of over 1,000 people joining these sessions – that’s just for 2026.

If I count all participants over the past nine years of summer tai chi in the park, the total is 3,490. Simply amazing. Huge thanks to my co-instructors Pauline and Barry and to Cornwall Park’s management and events team for hosting these sessions so you could all attend for free.

It was special to share this final Sunday with our wonderful regulars and to welcome more first-timers giving it a go. There’s something truly uplifting about moving, breathing, and connecting together under the trees in this beautiful park.

This is a bittersweet moment as we close our Sunday sessions for summer 2026—but it’s not quite the end… There is one final chance to join us on the evening of Tuesday 31 March at 6pm, weather permitting.

Come along on the 31st and be part of the magic one more time: https://www.kiaorataichi.nz/free-tai-chi/

Kia ora tai chi whānau: Yay, my accessible, free tai chi sessions in Cornwall Park for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV) have attracted media interest.

You can read the article here: https://tewahanui.nz//culture/accessible-tai-chi

I am a qualified instructor with specialist skills and experience in teaching participants who are BLV. These sessions in the park are all about creating a welcoming, inclusive space where anyone can enjoy the calm, connection and health benefits of tai chi together.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who has been part of this journey, especially Pauline, who has been my co-teacher for the accessible sessions this summer.

A huge thank you to the events team at Cornwall Park for funding these sessions so participants can attend for free, and also to journalist Makayla Powick for recognising this kaupapa and reporting on it for Te Waha Nui.

The last accessible session happening for this summer will be in Cornwall Park this coming Sunday 29 March, 10:15am - 11am. The session is outdoors so we will need good weather.

Tai chi is being made accessible to blind and low-vision people through free sessions offered at Cornwall Park throughout March.

It was an overcast evening, but 43 keen ones arrived for tai chi and qigong tonight in Cornwall Park. We 'danced with rainbows' (a qigong movement) and that kept the rain away.

If the rain stays away, we'll be back in the park for more free tai chi this coming Sunday 29 March, at 9am. That will be our last Sunday for this summer. The last Tuesday evening will be Tues 31st March at 6pm (depending on the weather). Find out more: https://www.kiaorataichi.nz/free-tai-chi/

A fabulous 50 gathered for tai chi at today's tranquil late-summer morning in Cornwall Park. It was so peaceful doing tai chi under the trees. My thanks to co-instructors Barry and Pauline.

It was especially heartwarming that a young mum joined us with her wee baby nestled in a front pack. Afterwards, she shared that her baby stayed calm and content the whole time—soaking up the gentle energy.

Even more special, she first came along last summer while pregnant… making this the baby’s second summer of tai chi.

After the general session, Pauline and I taught the tai chi session for those who were blind/had low vision. We particularly focused on the martial arts application for the movements, which helped the students understand how their bodies needed to move when doing tai chi and why.

If the good weather continues, there'll be another free tai chi session in the park on Tuesday evening, 24 March, 6pm. Find out more: https://www.kiaorataichi.nz/free-tai-chi/

42 (43 if I count the wee leprechaun) enjoyed a peaceful tai chi and qigong session in the evening sunshine in Cornwall Park. Some dressed in green as it was St Patrick's Day. Such fun.

As I have Irish ancestry, I wish my uniform was green, even if just for a day.

The weather has finally settled into autumnal mellowness. If the fine weather continues, we'll be back in the park for more free tai chi this coming Sunday 22 March, at 9am. Find out more: https://www.kiaorataichi.nz/free-tai-chi/
