Here are some hidden disruptors of your gut microbiome 🦠

Gut dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the gut microbiome. This can look like an increase in “bad” microbes, a reduction in beneficial bacteria, or a loss of overall microbial diversity.

This imbalance can disrupt healthy gut function and is linked with bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and conditions such as IBS, IBD, obesity, diabetes, immune dysfunction, mood imbalance and more.

Common causes of gut dysbiosis include frequent antibiotic use, long-term medication use, alcohol and a poor diet - but there are also less obvious factors too.

When I work with clients, I consider the whole picture - diet, lifestyle, environment and daily habits. This leads to long-term, sustainable improvements ♻️

I’m super excited to share these recent clinical findings that have helped me and my clients connect the dots and understand the causes of their symptoms 🔎

It’s so disappointing when clients mention being dismissed, gaslit and told they are perfectly healthy despite feeling otherwise. Usually, they’ve been navigating the medical system for years before seeing me.

Often, a few simple blood tests interpreted through a naturopathic lens reveal imbalances that explain some of their symptoms, and functional tests further help to uncover the root causes of their health concerns.

These clinical findings emphasise the importance of testing (not guessing) to identify and address the root cause. This approach helped these individuals to receive the care and answers they deserved 🥹🫶🏽

Here are some of the best foods for gut healing 👆🏽

Our gut health influences every other aspect of our health. Experiencing uncomfortable gut symptoms, inflammation, skin concerns, mood changes, and hormone disruptions may indicate a microbiome imbalance and a compromised gut lining.

Our microbiome and gut lining come into contact with everything we ingest, which is why our diet significantly impacts gut health — but this is only one part.

As I wrap up my year in clinic, I wanted to share an interaction I had with a client recently.

I was chatting about the importance of approaching health emotionally and spiritually and ways they could do that alongside us working together. They shared that they didn’t know where to start and felt overwhelmed with choices.

It reminded me of something I read recently in You Can Heal Your Life: “When you begin to clean your house, it doesn’t really matter which room you start in. Just begin in the area that appeals to you most.”

I‘ve learned this personally as someone who has tried various health approaches, including conventional medicine, Network Spinal Analysis, osteopathy, acupuncture, reiki, psychosynthesis counselling, massage, naturopathy and herbal medicine.

Each approach was pivotal in my growth journey and led me to another. Some still feel right, and I use them regularly or as needed. Others served a purpose at a different time and allowed me to move forward with more harmony.

All that to say, it doesn’t matter where you start your growth journey. Just start. In Louise’s words, “One level will always lead to another as long as there is willingness to grow and change.”

If you’re reading this, thank you for being here in 2023, and I hope 2024 moves you toward growth, healing and change. I can’t wait to connect with you again or for the first time if I have the honour of playing a role in that journey 🧡

Hi all, it’s time I formally introduce myself here ☺️ I’m Jess, and I’m a degree-qualified Naturopath and Medical Herbalist. I have 3+ years of clinical experience and recently started consulting at .ave, which I am beyond excited about! 🥰

I’m passionate about helping people with gut issues, hormone imbalances, fertility and mood concerns, and I support my clients to feel better in their bodies using simple naturopathic solutions. I have personal experience in these areas and turned to naturopathy to heal my body, which changed my life. I love that optimising my health is still a work in progress and always will be.

When I was little, I wanted to be an artist, and after high school, I studied civil engineering, which I eventually dropped out of. Soon after that, I found naturopathy/naturopathy found me, and I love that it is both an art and a science —my absolute dream job 🎨👩‍🔬

I lost my dad two years ago, and anyone who has lost a loved one knows that this changes you forever. More than ever, I understand the importance of connection and community, serving others and living with meaningful intention. I carry this with me every day into my work and personal life.

I’m a big advocate of preventative health care, health autonomy, nourishing your body with whole foods, daily movement, time in nature, and understanding and listening to your body.

I’ve progressively become a huge lover of nature with time, and I always feel more myself — less anxious, more present, creative and centred after spending time outdoors. I deeply appreciate that natural medicine is a way to reconnect with nature in our busy modern lives, and it’s a huge honour to share it with each of you 🌿

For nearly two years, I’ve worked at Tonic Room as an in-store naturopath, providing lots of acute naturopathic support, pouring hundreds of herbal tonics, blending bespoke herbal teas and creams and doing all sorts behind the scenes.

Providing acute naturopathic care in-store makes me so happy — especially if it means that natural medicine is more accessible!
Still, 1-1 consultations allow me to provide better patient care so I'm excited to be sharing naturopathy more fully in this special space ✨

The festive season is upon us - keep your digestion in check with these naturopathic tips:

1. Eat slowly and mindfully.
2. Chew your food!
3. Stay hydrated - especially if you're an alcohol or coffee drinker.
4. Avoid skipping meals, and eat regular, balanced meals.
5. Prioritise fresh, whole, unprocessed foods 🥦
6. Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
7. Move daily and take breaks from sitting.
8. Consider trying herbal tea or medicine, i.e. peppermint, fennel and ginger 🫖
9. Seek help from a healthcare professional if needed.
10. Don’t overthink it - enjoy yourself 🤍

Studies have revealed the benefits of spending time in nature, including stress reduction, improved sleep and mood, hormone modulation and improved immunity.

With this in mind, I set an intention earlier this year to spend more time outdoors, and since then, I've experienced benefits that go far beyond the physical. Spending time in nature has helped me shift perceptions, expand my vision (literally - by using my peripheral vision), transmute 'sticky' energy, process grief and emotions, and find a sense of calm when life feels overwhelming.

Exposure to fresh air, sunlight and nature is an easy way to support health and vitality and can be achieved simply by stepping outside, taking a walk, lying in the sun, putting your hands in the soil or placing your feet on the earth. Get out today and every day and discover the healing power of nature for yourself.
