Kent Johns Health

Kent Johns Health I am a Health Coach who can guide you to sustainably good health. I will help you to make better choices and find your own path to a healthy life. KJ

Being fit and healthy will change your life. You will have the energy to tackle a big day because you have had a good night’s sleep. You will make better decisions at work because you’ll have greater mental clarity. And you will be able to keep up with your kids because that good food you are eating will help you lose weight and be more mobile. It really is inspiring to know it doesn’t take long to get healthy, and it certainly doesn’t have to be difficult. The more fun you have, the better results you will see. Exciting times are ahead so let’s get into it!

At dinner we go around the table.

Everyone shares their high, their low, and who their hero was that day.

Picked up this idea from the Men’s Muster health retreat about three years ago and we’ve been doing it most nights since. It’s a good way to connect with the kids and hear about their day. And connection is vital for our wellbeing!

What do you do to connect with your whānau?

Here’s the thing about being a health coach that will probably surprise you...

I don’t tell my clients what to eat. I don’t hand out meal plans or workout schedules.

You already know vegetables are good for you. You know you should move your body. You know processed food isn’t great.

The real work happens when I ask the right questions.

Questions that help you figure out why you keep sabotaging yourself. Questions that reveal what’s actually stopping you from doing the things you know you should do.

Because when you find your own answers, you actually follow through.

Why is it that when times are tough and we find ourselves busy and overwhelmed we stop looking after our own wellbeing? I have seen this so many times I am no longer amazed by it. Sadly, this is now typical, and almost to be expected.

And this is a trend happening the world over- at precisely the time we need to look after ourselves as best we can so we can cope with life, selfcare falls all the way to the bottom of our priority list. How the hell can we be at our best for others when we won’t look after ourselves? We really shouldn’t be shocked burnout rates are at an all-time high.

Turning this ship around will take a little time, patience, and self-compassion but we can do it. Today is the day to make a deal with yourself- “Each day I will do one thing (however small) for ME. And I will be proud of myself for doing it. Giddyup!!”
Let’s get into it! All the best.

Deloitte recently published a research paper titled '𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯...

Deloitte recently published a research paper titled '𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱'.
For every $1 spent on mental wellness initiatives, employers can expect a return on investment of $5.30. And the earlier the intervention the greater the ROI.
In other words, there needs to be an emphasis on prevention (as opposed to cure). We need to act earlier. We need fences at the top of the cliff and we need our people to be engaged in their own health. A lot of the mental distress we all face can be prevented if we have the coping tools.
Deloitte's study is the latest of many on mental and physical wellbeing, and they all tell us exactly the same thing- health and wellbeing initiatives are not a cost to your business. They are an investment that will only enhance the success of your organisation.

I was chatting at a function recently and was asked "What the hell does wellbeing actually mean? It just sounds like some spurious buzzword".
I think it's a fair point and so I'll give you my translation. When we mention 'wellbeing' or 'wellness' we are actually talking about a person's health. And good health can really only be achieved by having an efficient metabolism, a solid immune system and the ability to adequately cope with everyday stress. Without these three features aligned, it is pretty bloody hard to achieve a state of 'wellbeing'. So although I provide wellbeing programmes in name, what I actually offer is information, tools and support so people can get themselves healthy. When we are healthy we are well!

We all need help when it comes to wellbeing because none of us can do it alone. And the expectation now is, help must come from employers. It has been proven time and time again, workplace wellbeing programmes are an investment and not a cost.

Please reach out to me for more information on how to get one started at your office. In the meantime, jump out of your chair and grab a glass of water or do a few stretches. Enjoy your workday!

Thanks to Jarrod Bear and the Auckland Rugby Union for getting me along to talk to the staff about doing the little things well. You guys chose a great theme for the day because focusing on the little things is exactly what we all need to do to make the big gains.

𝗟𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 = 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀.

We had a fun and engaging session, with lots of questions and plenty of laughs! I also really enjoyed talking to a few of the crew over lunch about how they are doing. Great to see another employer putting health and mental wellbeing as a top priority. 🧘‍♀🧘🚴🧡‍
