Kia ora, I’m a Rongoā Māori healer based in West Auckland and the founder of Rongoā Mauri. Our practice supports the healing of body, mind, and wairua by working in deep relationship with the native plants of Aotearoa. Rongoā Mauri is ACC Registered for Rongoā Māori services. We specialise in traditional plant medicine—harvesting, preparing, and sharing remedies passed down through generations. Each remedy carries the mauri (life force) of the ngahere and the wisdom of our tūpuna. We offer wānanga, workshops, and community learning spaces where people can reconnect with rongoā and restore balance. If you’re interested in bringing a Rongoā Mauri Trail or workshop to your workplace or community, we’d love to hear from you. You can also experience the healing power of Rongoā Māori through personalised online consultations. Guided by tikanga and the ancient intelligence of native plants, these sessions support holistic wellbeing—addressing stress, anxiety, trauma, and spiritual disconnection through therapeutic kōrero and intuitive guidance. Custom-made rongoā products, such as balms, teas, or tinctures, can also be created and shipped directly to you. Joanne Hakaraia

I planted these Kūmarahou six months ago and I’ve just done my first harvest. The leaves are vibrant at this time of year. Perfect timing for this transitional period as we move into a new season. It’s a busy time of the month with cosmic events such as equinox and eclipses occurring. We are in a transitional period as we move into a new season. This can have a shift on the body if we’re not prepared for it. It’s a good time to strengthen the immune system and prepare it for the cooler weather coming. Kūmarahou is a wonderful rongoā to drink during a transitional phase because of its bitterness. It supports digestion and will help detox the body and release mucus from the lungs. It wakes the body and gives it a gentle wiri, vibrational nourishment. I harvest in small batches. If this kōrero resonates for you, it is now available through our online store as a tincture or tea. www.rongoamauri.com

HOUHERE ~ I'm finally seeing an abundance of bees and other insects. Is this why you flowered so early in my garden?

I noticed my houhere flowering earlier than expected this year, and prolifically. Trees respond to conditions. Light, moisture, warmth, and subtle environmental shifts all play a part in when a plant chooses to flower.

Early flowering has long been read as a tohu, not a prediction, but a signal inviting us to observe more closely. Sometimes a tree offers nourishment early to support life ahead of change. There is information in the abundance of bloom. A bundle of light codes from the sun that we can tune into.

Talking about the sun, we have been having a considerable amount of solar flares recently and they can have a profound affect on our body. If you have been feeling tired and not sure why, check to see if there has been a solar flare. M class, X class and CME flares are the main ones that I can feel in my body. They can also cause havoc on technology, slow wifi etc. Salt baths(seawater is better), being in the ngahere to recalibrate will minimise the effects.

Please feel free to share your experiences.

Scent has the power to move a person out of stagnation or dullness and into another space within seconds. Fragrance is sound – it is vibration – and because of that, it is one of the most powerful mediums we can work with. This hydrosol carries many sounds within it. I like to listen for the song of the plant and, when I can, sound it back. Nick and I spent time doing this together. The notes that came through for me were G and G #. Nick heard E and E #. And still, there were many more notes layered beneath – a whole chorus rather than a single tone. We spent the day making Kānuka hydrosol, and the scent moving through the whare has been nothing short of magical. My lungs feel clear, my breath deep and open. The space itself feels fresh, alive, and vibrant. This hydrosol is being made for body sprays. I haven’t bought deodorant in years – I make my own balms – and Kānuka is one of the plants I trust deeply for this work. It is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial. And gently cleanses the underarms and keeps the skin cool. Sweat itself has no smell. it’s the bacteria that causes odour. Kānuka keeps that bacteria in balance, without blocking the bodies natural processes. We will have Kānuka hydrosol– kaitiaki – available on our online store in about a week. The Kānuka harvested for this distillation comes from our own whenua. I have watched these trees grow for nearly 20 years. They were once the only rākau standing at the edge of the ngahere, holding the line. Now they stand tall, creating shelter so other native plants can emerge and thrive. Kānuka are the kaitiki of the ngahere – strong, protective, and steady. They hold the boundary so the inner forest can remain safe. I like the sound of that on my skin.
