Measles update - Auckland region

We’ve confirmed one additional case of measles, bringing the total number of known cases to 14.

This latest case was at Auckland Grammar School during their infectious period on Friday 24 October. Students in Years 9 and 10 may have been exposed and are currently in quarantine while their immunity is checked.

We are working with the school to confirm immunity today. Students who are immune will be able to return to school on Monday 3 November.

We’re grateful to the Auckland Grammar community for their patience and cooperation. All staff and students are asked to stay alert for measles symptoms over the next two weeks.

Measles outbreak update - Wellington

Two new measles cases have been confirmed, bringing the total to 10 nationwide, including 3 in Wellington. Most cases are linked to the 3 October Bluebridge Ferry exposure.

New locations of interest and several hundred close contacts have been identified at Wellington College and Wellington Girls’ College. We are contacting affected individuals. Please follow all advice if you are contacted.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious health problems like pneumonia and brain swelling. One in three people with measles will need hospital care. Children under five, those who are pregnant, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. Two doses of the MMR vaccine after 12 months of age offer strong protection.

🚨Measles alert! Rising cases in NZ — don’t brush it off as just a cold.🚨

🧐 Know the signs:

- High temperature (≥ 38 °C)
- Cough, runny nose, sore or red eyes
- Then 3-5 days later: a red/pink rash that usually starts on the face, then spreads down the body
*The tricky bit: the rash may be hard to spot on darker skin, and the fever sticks around when it appears

⚠️ The early symptoms of Measles look very similar to a cold or the flu — which means it’s easy to miss.

🛡️ Best protection: Make sure your MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is completely up to date (2 doses or proof of immunity).

👏🧼Always ensure to wash your hands, and avoid sharing food and drinks to avoid the spread!

🌍 Be cautious when travelling: measles is spreading in other parts of the world, and returning travellers are a key source of outbreaks here.

🛑AVOID GOING INTO CLINIC UNANNOUNCED SO YOU DON’T EXPOSE OTHERS🛑
