There’s been so much going on here at START that we’re a little behind in acknowledging the many wonderful Trusts and Foundations that have supported our work this year. We’re so grateful for their generous support which plays such an important role in helping us do what we do!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting and thanking the generous organisations that have helped us continue our life changing mahi in 2025!

First up is Hutt Mana Charitable Trust – supporting us for the first time this year by helping fund our Speech-Language Therapist (SLT) salaries. Their support helps make our life-changing work possible.

SLT Chris got a tattoo for START, live on TV!

We’re still enjoying an incredible high after our fundraising achievements last week and the good news keeps coming!

This morning, our wonderful speech-language therapist Chris, was LIVE on TVNZ Breakfast getting his tattoo!

When we launched the campaign, Chris promised to get the tattoo if we reached our goal of $30,000, which we surpassed by achieving just over $39,000!

https://30forstart.raiselysite.com/

We are so grateful to have such generous supporters like you who made this happen AND to the passionate Chris, whose idea it was to get the tattoo in the first place.

Helena and Chris got to goof around before his tattoo, but during the interview Chris was a consummate professional.

Thank you as well to tattoo artist Damian Morris, and the owner of Auckland Tattoo Braden McMahon. You guys are great!

THANK YOU to each and every one of you. It’s because of you, our community, that we have not only reached, but SURPASSED our fundraising goal of $30,000! 🥳🙌🏽🎉 Thanks also to a very generous anonymous donor - the amount raised is over $38,000 and donations are still coming in!

It absolutely wouldn’t have been possible without all your support, enthusiasm and generosity. 💗 We have many people we’d like to shout out and thank:

Our participants, donors, Matt James and Nikki Hart Nutrition Ltd, our raffle providers: the Mackie Family offering up their beautiful holiday home in picturesque Riverton and the fabulous Kate C***s from Mt Nicholas Station, and last but not least, the START team and board!

We really didn’t know how our first fundraiser would go, but it’s been a tremendous success, with plenty of learnings for next year.

Again, on behalf of the START team, board and community — at big heartfelt THANK YOU 🩵💚🩵💚

Our young client and supporter, Freya, with the actor from ‘The King’s Speech!’ ❤️🎭

Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

“Last night I went to The Kings Speech at the new court theatre and I got to meet the actor Jason Hadzelmans who played King George aka Bertie and the actress Emma Newborn who played Myrtle Logue (fun fact Emma is making a movie out of her play that she is in with my friend Willas Mum!) It was an amazing experience meeting them, they were so kind and Jason had to work with a speech therapist to make sure his stuttering sounded realisitic! He fooled me, I asked my Mum if he stuttered in real life. nope!

My thoughts of the play were that I didn't like how mean his brother was about his stutter. It makes me think my little brother is an angel!! I also didn't like how he spoke to himself about his stutter, my advice to Bertie would be to calm down and think to yourself "I don't care what others say, I have a stutter and I can do this!" Everyone else who stutters you shouldn't care what others say either. You do you!”

It’s the last day of our campaign and we’re NEARLY at our goal.

Here’s an insight as to what it takes to be an inspiration, from a proud father of one of our young fundraising participants. 💚 🩵

“Shout out to Joel Rocco Jarvis - One massive effort this month, fundraising for such a rad cause! Like his middle name, he has rocked it. I can truly say he has done every push-up and squat, even after eating too much pizza or not feeling well. He has pushed through and conquered something he wasn’t sure he could do at the beginning of the month!

He has gained muscle and confidence and helped others who are waiting to gain access to treatment from an amazing team at START. I hope you know how much that will mean to so many people! It all started with someone’s idea to help others, but it has taken everyone to step up to make it all happen.

To everyone who has been part of it thank you! Whether it was taking part in the challenge, supporting from the side-line or making contributions. It will go a long way to helping others.
I put it to anyone in the future to take up a challenge especially when it will benefit others.

We all have bumps in life but with support and the right tools, things do smooth out. Just think, maybe next time you’re talking to someone who has a stutter it could be Joel Rocco Jarvis. Don’t judge, but listen. What he has to say could inspire you. I know I was inspired and I couldn’t be more proud as a Father. One last shout out…
