Did you know that when a lesion is removed, it’s sliced into ultra-thin layers - these thin layers are about 4 microns thick, which is thinner than a human hair! These slices need to be incredibly thin for a simple but important reason: microscopes can only clearly see single layers of cells. πŸ”¬

What happens after a lesion is removed?

Once in the lab, the lesion is carefully sliced depending on its size - tiny ones may be halved, while larger or irregular ones are cut into multiple sections (a bit like slicing a loaf of bread 🍞). Each section is set into a wax block to keep it stable. From there, ultra-thin layers are shaved off with a special tool and placed onto glass slides. Under the microscope πŸ”¬, these slides reveal whether the tissue is harmless or shows signs of skin cancer.

The evolution of the skin cancer ABCDE's began in 1985 by physicians Drs. Al Kopf and Darrell Rigel, along with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), as a public health campaign to help people recognise signs of early skin cancerous lesions.

Melanoma is a dangerous skin cancer that can spread quickly. Here’s how it travels through the bloodstream:

- Starts in the skin – Melanoma grows from pigment cells (melanocytes).
- Breaks into deeper layers – It pushes through the skin into tissue and blood vessels.
- Gets into the bloodstream – Cancer cells enter nearby blood vessels.
- Travels to other organs – The blood carries these cells to places like the lungs, liver, or brain.
- Forms new tumors – Once there, the cancer can grow and spread even more.

🩸 That’s why early detection is so important. Check your skin and get your spots checked!
