On Saturday 8 March Beyond Radiology Hamilton was officially opened, with a dawn blessing by local Iwi, Ngaati Wairere and Tainui. With the practice now standing on historic fortified Pa land, it was very fitting that distinguished members of Ngaati Wairere shared the rich history of Kirikiriroa Pa.
In the late 1830's, Kirikiriroa Pa was a fortified Pa within the boundaries of Hamilton City, which was occupied by various Ngaati Wairere ancestors for at least 200 years, prior to 1864. Over several generations, the upper river terraces along with what is now Victoria Street, were burnt off for native flora for cultivation grounds for growing kumara, taro and Hue bottle gourds. Many of the former storage pits were used as basements for early European buildings.
Kirikiriroa Pa became a principal focal place for meeting with many traders and missionaries between 1838- 1863, as Ngaati Wairere ventured into growing produce for the Auckland markets and supplying processed flax.
Beyond Radiology would like to sincerely thank Ngaati Wairere for welcoming us onto their land, and for Ngaati Wairere and Tainui for blessing our new clinic/whare and staff.
