DESSERT late at night… never say never! My nephew just got on the phone to his buddy who has been whitebaiting today on the Manawatu - only a few km’s from Foxton. I’m blown away by the “local food stories” right here - and I havent had a chance to yet stop in at RJ’s Licorice!! These fritters were a quick cheeky taste w lemon + freshly ground pepper before heading off to bed.

I found my HAPPY PLACE …. Sydney Fish Market! Just so so good, I wish we had something (at this level) like this back home in Auckland - interestingly I’m told 70% of the fresh fish is all from NZ!! Amazing selection I could honestly die and go to Seafood Heaven … a must experience if you are visiting Sydney

It was GREAT to see recently graduated AUT chef and NZ Young Chefs Club member - Emily Morgan competing for her second time in the Nestle Golden Chef Hat competition today in Sydney. It’s the 60th year this prestigious Young Chefs competition has been held!! There was a very high standard across all the 12 competitors and the dishes looked pretty amazing - I wish I could have tasted them all, and tough nervous work watching from the sideline! Results will be announced tomorrow evening.

A great night was had last week at the announcement of the NZ Ice cream Awards… Supreme champions were a Takapuna Beach Cafe for their Licorice Gelato and - Much More Wonders Strawberry Low Fat Yoghurt Ice Cream. A true honour to be Chief Judge again with a brilliant Team of 24 judges! 68 Gold medals awarded an improvement in last year and entires were up too. I-SCREAM, You-Scream, we all scream for ice-cream and gelato and sorbet!!!
Just had the most delicious day tasting the 266 entries in this years New Zealand Ice-Cream awards. It is a privilege as chief judge, to oversee all 14 categories and disvover what flavour of classsic, premium, export, dairy free, low fat, frozen yoghurt, innovative, creative, new category “best-of-biscuit” will end up being the countries best gelato, sorbet or ice-cream! Many thanks to our superb judging team and the firm handed team of scoopers.
One thing is for certain… I now need to go and ride my bike!!
