We all have likes and dis-likes, this is part of who we are and our unique story. However, upon reflection you may notice that some of these preferences were created by past experiences or views/beliefs we have taken on from others.
Over the last few days, me and my daughter were listening to 'Sweater Weather' by The Neighbourhood a lot on our beach road trip and these lyrics "I hate the beach, but I stand in California with my toes in the sand" reminded me of a session I had with one of my clients.
For me I absolutely love the beach, and I have always had positive experiences at the beach since I was a baby - apart from the one time that I nearly drown at Muriwai when I was about 4-6 years old.
But one of my clients says she hates the beach, and when we dived a bit deeper we found that there were some experiences in her childhood that formed this dis-like. Without going into too much detail, some of the things that popped up were:
- The view her Mother put on her that the beach was a dirty place (I guess, sand does stick to you 😜), and this included her mothers dis-taste for sand in the car.
- She also remembered getting really badly sunburnt when she was holidaying at the beach with her grandparents when she was a young child.
There were a couple more things that came up in the session around the views she had taken on from her mother (not only to do with the beach).
But in reality, we are all so very different and we do not have to like everything!
It is completely normal to have likes and dis-likes, though I believe they should be Ours - not taken on from others, such as our husband or parents etc. Especially when you like or dis-like something just to please others or save face... You are not being true to yourself when you do this!
*** So I was wondering, who here 'likes' or 'dis-likes' the beach? PLEASE COMMENT ***
