From early 2026, New Zealand prescribers can issue up to 12-month prescriptions for stable, long-term medications, meaning you may not need to see your doctor for a repeat prescription each quarter.
Your doctor will decide if a 12-month prescription is safe and appropriate for you, and certain medications and conditions will not be eligible.
What this means for you
➡️Fewer GP visits: You may no longer need a GP appointment each time you need a new repeat prescription.
➡️More time and money saved: You could save time off work or school, and reduce travel costs, especially if you live rurally.
➡️Same dispensing schedule: You will still pick up your medication from the pharmacy in three-month instalments, NOT the full 12 months at once.
➡️Clinical discretion: Your doctor will determine if a 12-month prescription is safe for you. It will only be issued if your health condition and medication are stable.
Patients with unstable conditions or those taking controlled medications (like opioids or stimulants) will likely remain on shorter prescription cycles.
How to find out if you are eligible?
The best way to know for sure is to talk to your doctor at your next appointment.
They will assess your specific health needs and decide what is appropriate for you.
