🍎 30+ A DAY? 🥗

How many different foods do you eat every day, on average?

It is recommended we eat at least 30 different foods per day. The world has over 50,000 edible plants, but just three of them, rice, corn and wheat, provide 60% of the world’s energy intake. And 15 plants provide 90% of the world’s energy intake.

Remember this number of 30 different foods each day, does not take quantity into consideration. Therefore, you only need a small quantity of each.

Variety is essential because every food supplies us with unique nutrients. We require these nutrients (vitamins and minerals) for every function in the body e.g. energy production, stress resilience, detoxification, strong immunity, skin renewal, healthy hair, nail growth, etc.

According to the Heart Foundation NZ, an analysis on worldwide research based on 2 million people, found incredible results when people increased their intake of fruit and vegetables to 10+ servings (800 grams) a day.

🫒 OLIVE OIL - Liquid Gold 🫒

Olive oil should be purchased in a dark bottle. Have you noticed that all high-quality olive oils come in a black or dark green bottle? This is to prevent light oxidation while it sits on the shop shelf. It should be stored in a cool, dark place to further minimise light and heat oxidation (although the fridge is too cold, it will start to solidify). Fats are prone to oxidation through light, heat and oxygen.

The Most Common Nutrient Deficiency in the World 🩸

IRON DEFICIENCY, especially anaemia, increases the occurrence of illness and infections 🦠

One study carried out in eight Auckland high schools found that 18.3% of teenage girls were iron-deficient and 11.5% were anaemic. While only 1.5% and 1.4% (respectively) for teenage boys. This is because boys are likely to eat more red meat and they don’t menstruate!

Symptoms of iron deficiency include tiredness, fatigue, low energy, pallor, breathlessness, feeling faint, hair loss, bright red tongue, and spoon-shaped nails.

The RDI is 8mg for adult men and 18mg for women aged 19-50 (menstruating age) and 8mg for women over 50, per day. The RDI for pregnant women is 27mg per day.

Food Sources and their Approximate Iron Content per 100g…
