"POP" "CRACK" "CLICK" - Let's talk about the sounds joint make, either on their own or during treatment...Joint sounds are very common in both normal and symptomatic joints. Creaky knee's climbing up and down stairs, clicky wrists when picking up objects, popping hips as you change postiions... are all examples of truely harmless, and normal, joint sounds.

We refer to these sounds as 'cavitations'. Cavitation is the process where a sound is made after a change in pressure in the joint/tissues, that causes gasses from within the joint to be released.

Joint sounds during treatment:
In some cases, particulalry in joint mobilisations, a cavitation may be elicited. This is not the joint going back into place as a lot of people think. Rather, an indication that we have created a bit of movement within the joint space.

That's not to say that if it doesn't click it isn't moving - it all comes down to the movement of gasses within the joint that may, or may not, be displaced.

It may be that your physio's hand and wrist joints clicks while doing hands-on teatment more than yours do!

When to be concerned?
Joint sounds accompanied with pain, swelling or limited movement may be a sign that there is something else going on. We would recommend consulting your Physio or GP if you haven't already seen them for the issue.

For the most part, clicky joints are normal joints and a sign of good joint health!

Why do Physio's use hands-on technqiues?Manual therapy has a long history in the Physio profession, with a large variety of manual therapy approaches and techniques available for clinicians to use.

Modern research has shown the complex affects that are at play when using hands-on techniques, particulary on the nervous system. This moves away from the traditional belief that manual therapy has a primarily mechanical effect on tissues when being implemented.

So how does it make you feel better?

1. Manual therapy can reduce pain which in turn improves your psychological state (less stressed, worried, tired, feeling down, etc). Pain is reduced by stimulating the pain-gate mechanism (where neurological gateways decide which pain signals pass through and which don't).

2. Manual therapy reduces the detection of painful stimuli by bodily tissues.

3. Manual therapy reduces and relieves pressures and/or tensions on tissues such as muscles or joint structures.

4. It is also considered that a positive placebo response can be produced.

Manual therapy is a useful tool in a Physio's pocket, and just one of many tools utiised to help you from A to B.

Chat to your Physio to see whether specific manual therapy techniques would be beneficial for you.

If you're thinking about retutning to higher impact sports and activities postpartum, then a graded return to activty plan is recommended. This should begin from week 12, at the earliest. A check in with your Physio is beneficial to assess the readiness of your pelvic floor muscles. This involves testing their strength, endurance and coordination. Once cleared by a Physio, activities such as road or trail running, lap swimming, road or off road cycling and change in direction sports can be commenced.

Graded return to sport plans include short periods of easy paced activity with intermittent walking/rest breaks. Over 8-12 weeks, the period of activity and intensity is increased (approx 10% each week) until the target distance or time is achieved. For example the β€˜Couch to 5k’ running
program.

In addition to Apps and online programs, you can consult a Physio or Sport coach to help you with a tailored plan to suit your goals.

Strength exercises specific to PFM training can be reduced to 2-3 times a week and integrated into exercises that place load on the PFM, such as a heavy squats, leg presses, adductor squeezes in table top.

Have you heard of "Di Recti"? Diastasis Re**us Abdominus (DRA) is the name given to the separation of the abdominal muscles. DRA is a common
occurrence in women during pregnancy and after childbirth.

DRA is sometimes referred to as 'the gap' felt in the centre of your tummy where your abdominal muscles meet around the belly button. This is also where it is at its widest (due to being the further point of stretch during pregnancy).

If you have DRA post childbirth, you can expect β€˜the gap’ to close naturally or reduce down to a smaller size (around 2cm) within 12 weeks post birth. This can however take some longer than others.

To better prepare the abdominal muscles for the forces that sports and exercise demand of them, exercises specific to the deep core and abdominal muscles can be performed.

Should you want further guidance on rehab for DRA, consult a Physio who can help you.

Golf as a game presents unique challenges to the body. It is a sport that combines bouts of high-intensity and high skill, all while requring a level of fitness to endure the demands of playing shot after shot. What a Golf TPI Specialist does and how it can help your game:

There may be physical injuries that are associated with your golf swing. TPI specialists look at how the injury developed and how specific physical limitations can be addressed to improve your golfing performance.

TPI Specialists perform golf-specific injury assessments and utilise rehabilitation techniques to get you back to swinging your club more freely. They are also able to design effective strength and conditioning programs for players of all ages and abilities.

If you're a golfer and have a couple of ni**les that just aren't going away, it may be worth seeing a TPI Specilaist to see if the ni**le is related to your swing.

Some say knowledge is power... so it is safe to say that having a good understanding of your arthritis can give you better confidence in managing it!Arthritis isn’t a single condition but rather a name given to a group of conditions affecting your joints. Common reported symptoms of arthritis include pain, stiffness, swelling, reduced mobility/range of movement and reduced strength or function.

There are several types of arthritis with the most common being Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid (Inflammatory) arthritis, Infective arthritis and Gout.

A Physio or GP can help you obtain an accurate diagnosis as to whether or not you have arthritis, and if you do, what to do about it.

There are many tools that can be used to help manage your pain and unpleasant symptoms as well as preserving your joint health.

Understanding your condition, prioritising physical activity (exercise and movement), and maintaining a healthy weight are 3 essential components of this positive action plan.
