I didn’t realise how deeply gaslighting had shaped me
until my coach asked a simple question:
“Why do you keep gaslighting yourself?”
I went quiet.
Because I wasn’t doing it consciously.
It was etched into my psyche.
So normal it felt invisible.
Gaslighting isn’t just something done to you.
Over time, it becomes something you do to yourself
without even realising.
It looks like this:
• You question your own memory even when you know what happened
• You minimise your feelings, “It’s not that bad”
• You override your intuition with logic, explanation, or doubt
• You look outside yourself for reassurance before trusting your own knowing
• You freeze when asked to make a decision, afraid of choosing “wrong”
• You try to keep everyone happy, even at the cost of yourself
• You replay conversations, searching for where you might be at fault
• You feel foggy, indecisive, or disconnected from your sense of truth
When I got curious, I saw how much this had shaped my life.
My daughters would get frustrated with me, not because I didn’t care,
but because I struggled to decide.
Making decisions felt risky.
Pleasing everyone felt safer.
Not because I was weak
but because my body had learned that disagreement, certainty,
or clarity
once came with consequences.
That’s the part people don’t talk about.
Gaslighting doesn’t just distort your thinking.
It retrains your nervous system to doubt itself.
So you hesitate.
You over-explain.
You second-guess.
You scan for reactions before you land in your own truth.
And eventually, you don’t even notice you’re doing it.
Until something, or someone
asks the question.
And awareness begins.
Maybe if you recognise this in yourself,
there is a way to break the cycle.
There is a way to turn it around.
In Kanika, we don’t try to think our way out of self-doubt.
We work at the level where these patterns formed.
In the bones.
In the breath.
In the body.
The bones are where beliefs are held.
The breath is what allows them to release.
And only then
when the body feels safe enough
do new reframes begin to land and align with a different truth.
Not one you force.
One your system can actually trust.
I’m opening 4 one-to-one Kanika spaces
for a 4-month journey,
starting 19th January.
This work is slow, precise, and deeply embodied.
If this speaks to you,
you’re welcome to reach out.
Sometimes the most powerful shift
begins with noticing what you’ve been doing
without even knowing it.
