Iyengar Yoga is a style of yoga named after an amazing man who just turned 95 in December 2013. He's also now been put forward for a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. Mr Iyengar whilst practicing yoga himself many years ago discovered the use of props (equipment) to enable the student to meet the pose & have the ability to extend & strengthen all muscle groups, to align the bones, (the skeletal scaffolding of the body). The brilliance of Mr Iyengar's discovery of a simple piece of equipment, i.e. to stretch hamstrings the student can simply lie down supine(on back) & hook a strap around one foot raising that leg to enable the leg to straighten, meanwhile press the other leg onto the floor. This simple way of working poses with a clear description from well-trained Iyengar Teachers will not only physically improve the length of the hamstrings but it can enhance an athletes performance, relieve backache & even bring a student into learning how to straighten their legs.
