This week we used real photos of everyday objects to practise categorising — clothes, animals, body parts, food and more! 🌈

Real images can help children connect therapy to real life, build vocabulary, and understand how things belong together. 💬💡

Try it at home — grab a few photos or objects and see what your child can group and why! 👏

⭐🦷⭐ CHOMPIN’ CHARLIE! ⭐🦷⭐

Another clinic favourite - let us reintroduce Chompin’ Charlie! This classic is the perfect tool for helping kids practise tricky sounds.

💡 How we use it in therapy:
Target specific speech sounds (like /s/, /tʃ/, /k/) while taking turns
Make repetitive speech exercises playful and engaging
Colour matching for added language fun!

👍 Why kids love it:
The suspense of Charlie chomping keeps them focused, motivated, and giggling—so practising speech feels like play, not work!

👩‍⚕️ Therapist tip:
Combine target words with fun voices or silly sentences to make every turn a speech-filled adventure.

⭐️ DRAW, DESCRIBE, SPEAK, CREATE! ⭐️

We drew our own monsters and practised describing every detail out loud – from their spiky horns to fuzzy fur and long legs ✨. Then we used our words to bring our creations to life!

This is a fun way to build vocabulary, practise sentence structure, and strengthen speech and language skills – all while being creative. 🤖💥

🧙‍♀️✨ WITCHES, WORDS, AND SOUNDS! ✨🧹

Halloween-themed images (like witches!) can be so much more than just spooky fun — they’re a great tool for language and articulation goals!

🎃 For language -
⭐️Build describing skills: What is the witch wearing? What’s she holding?
⭐️Practise verbs: flying, stirring, casting, cackling!
⭐️Work on sentence starters: “The witch is…”, “She can…”, “I see…”

👄 For articulation -
⭐️Target tricky sounds in context — like /w/ in witch, wand, wiggle, or /ch/ in witch, broomstick, cauldron 🪄
⭐️Use silly spells or short phrases for repetition practice (“Wiggly witch waves!”, “Cheeky child charms chocolate!”)

Simple seasonal pictures can spark big conversations — and a lot of laughter! 🧙‍♀️💬

🛋️ OLDIE BUT A GOODIE 🛋️

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ve probably seen Grouch Couch make an appearance… and for good reason! This classic game never gets old! 🎲

In our SLT sessions, Grouch Couch is a huge hit because it’s fun, fast-paced, and packed with opportunities for language and communication growth:

💬 Vocabulary & sentence structure:
Kids love describing what’s happening — “He ate my token!” or “It’s your turn!” We model and expand language naturally through play.

👂 Listening & comprehension:
Following the game’s steps, listening for instructions, and understanding turn order build auditory processing and attention skills.

🤝 Social communication:
Turn-taking, waiting, sharing reactions, and coping when the couch “eats” your tokens are all chances to practice social language and emotional regulation.

🧠 Predicting & problem-solving:
We talk about what might happen next, “Do you think he’ll burp?” and encourage flexible thinking when things don’t go as expected!

Sometimes the simplest games bring the biggest engagement and Grouch Couch consistently gets smiles, giggles, and brilliant language moments. 💬✨

👻🎃 SPOOKY SENSORY PLAY 🕯️💀

Halloween-themed sensory rice 🖤 Filled with little ghosts, pumpkins, and skulls, it’s not just festive, it’s a language playground!

Here’s how we use sensory play like this in our language sessions:

💬 Vocabulary building: We explore and name what we find — ghost, pumpkin, skull! — and use describing words like big, small, orange, white, spooky, or happy.

👂 Comprehension & following directions:
“Find the small pumpkin.”
“Hide two ghosts in the rice.”
“Can you scoop up three skulls?”
Following playful instructions builds listening, memory, and understanding of concepts.

🗣️ Expanding sentences:
We model and encourage children to say full sentences:
“I found a happy ghost!”
“The small pumpkin is hiding!”

🤝 Turn-taking and social interaction:
Taking turns to scoop, pour, and describe builds social communication and shared attention.

✨ Sensory regulation:
The smooth rice and hidden surprises help children stay calm, engaged, and ready to learn — language flows best when little bodies feel settled.

Fun, hands-on play like this makes language learning magical! 🪄

⭐️ WELCOME TO OUR OT STUDENT ⭐️

With this week being week it’s fitting to celebrate and introduce to you our student Ashley who’s joined us from virtually across the other side of the world 🌍 for eight weeks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Here’s a little bit about her:

🏒 Proud Canadian who’d rather be on the ice than watching from the stands — playing hockey is one of my favourite ways to blow off steam.
🏕️ Hiking boots and a tent? Say less. I’m happiest out in nature with a campfire and fresh air.
🎲 Board games are my jam — I’m always up for a game night (yes, even the complicated rule ones).
🗣️ I speak a bit of French and Spanish — enough to get by and charm a waiter or two.
☕ No coffee for me, thanks — but hand me a chai or London Fog and I’m in heaven.
🤹‍♀️ Fun party trick: I can juggle with my hands and keep a soccer ball up with my knees and feet — both kinds of juggling count, right?
💇‍♀️ I’ve donated my hair three times so far — and it’s probably time for round four!
🐶 Dreaming of the day I can adopt a little Jack Russell — full of sass, smarts, and zoomies.
📺 Not much of a TV buff, but I am currently deep in a binge of The Crown.
🚪 In the past six months, I’ve been inside six different prisons — all part of my last occupational therapy placement!

⭐️ TOY OF THE WEEK ⭐️ Jake the Snake has always been a hit in clinic 🐍 the kids wait in anticipation for Jake to lunge at them and it makes me jump every single time 😂
