⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ IMPORTANT INFORMATION ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

Please take the time to 📖 read through this information, the importance of the MMR vaccine and it's protection against measles especially.

As we head into the festive season where some of us may be preparing to travel overseas, double check entry requirements around vaccinations at the time you make your travel plans as measles rears it's head again. Stay safe, stay protected. (The following is from the Immunisation Advisory Centre) ✌🏾

All cases of measles seen in New Zealand are the result of non-immune people bringing the virus into the country from overseas. Very high coverage of this vaccine is necessary to prevent the spread of measles, in particular, and no vaccination opportunity should be missed.

After a single dose of MMR vaccine 90–95 out of 100 people will be protected from measles, 69–81 protected from mumps and 90–97 from rubella. After a second dose of MMR vaccine the number of people protected from these diseases increases, almost everyone will be protected from measles and rubella, and around 85% protected from mumps.

The MMR vaccine is given as part of the National Immunisation Schedule at ages 12 months and 15 months. MMR vaccine is free for everyone in New Zealand under the age of 18, regardless of a person's immigration status. For those aged 18 and over, the MMR vaccine is free if the person is eligible for funded healthcare in New Zealand.

Immunity to measles, mumps and rubella is assumed after two documented doses of MMR or documented disease, unless revaccination is required post-immunosuppression or in occupational high-risk situations where serology has been undertaken.

Immunity to measles is also assumed in people who lived in New Zealand prior to 1969. Other people who lived in countries with limited circulating measles* prior to 1969 may not be immune to measles if not previously immunised with a measles-containing vaccine. Therefore, they can be considered for funded MMR vaccination, particularly in the case of a community outbreak. Those born prior to 1969 do not need to be recalled for MMR vaccination but may benefit from a clinical discussion about their risk.

MMR vaccine information has recently been updated in the Immunisation Handbook to not preclude people born before 1969.

* Countries with limited circulating measles prior to 1969 include remote island nations

Consider MMR vaccination needs by age groups:
👵🏼👴🏾‍70 years or older
People aged in their 70s and older do not need MMR vaccine.

🏃🏻‍♂️Mid-50s and 60s
People aged in their mid-50s and in their 60s are very unlikely to need a vaccine, but it can be considered if necessary e.g travelling to high-risk countries.

🏋️‍♀️Adults up to mid-50s
People aged younger than mid-50s need MMR if they do not have a clear record of two doses of measles containing vaccine or confirmed measles. Two doses, at least 4 weeks apart.

🚸Childhood
Two scheduled MMR doses should be given at 12 months and 15 months of age. Children who have not received two documented doses can be offered catch-up doses, given at least 4 weeks apart. If a child receives an MMR0 dose before 12 months of age, they still require the two scheduled doses at 12 months and 15 months.

🌴Overseas vaccine records
It is important to check vaccine history for children vaccinated overseas to ensure any missing MMR vaccines are offered as part of a priority infant and child catch-up vaccination programme.

(well done for making it to the end! 🏆⭐)

Measles is reappearing and the rates are increasing fam.

Make this week a priority in getting your MMR vaccines sorted. Whether it's just checking you are immunised or taking a loved to get theirs done - you won't be short of places to go to :)

If you need assistance, just give us a ring in the clinic ✌🏾

It’s Measles Immunisation Week! 🛡️

Measles is highly contagious - but the good thing is it’s also preventable. This week is all about making sure our communities are protected.

✅ The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is free for anyone under 18 and for those eligible for free healthcare. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide 99% of people with protection against measles.

📍 Drop-in clinics are running in many places across the country - no appointment needed.

📍 Many pharmacists and GP clinics offer MMR immunisation.

👶 Not sure if your child is immunised? Now’s the time to check.

📲 Visit info.health.nz/immunisations/immunisation-clinics for local drop-in clinics near you. Note that not every part of NZ has drop-in clinics running, but lots of pharmacies are providing MMR.

📲 Visit healthpoint.co.nz for MMR providers around the country, including pharmacies.

📲 Book a vaccine online at: info.health.nz/bookavaccine
