What’s that buzz? It could be tinnitus which is often heard as buzzing, ringing, clicking or a noise like cicadas when there is no actual external noise.

Throughout the world, the buzz this week is all about tinnitus. It’s Tinnitus awareness week this week, 2-9 February 2026.

The purpose of tinnitus awareness week is to raise public awareness of tinnitus and to inform people about where they can get help to understand their tinnitus and live or deal with it.

About 2 in 3 New Zealanders are expected to get tinnitus during their lifetime, so it’s a common problem. Fortunately, it’s not a big problem for everyone, but it can be very troubling for some.

If you’d like to understand more about your tinnitus make an appointment with our audiologist.

Check out this interview on Stuff.co.nz about safe noise levels in bars and cafes. They spoke with Lisa Seerup, president of Hearing New Zealand about how to make going out easier for those with and without hearing loss.

"“There's been some interesting research done in Australia where they asked people who go to bars and clubs that are quite loud, about what do they think of the loud music? And many people say they quite like the music to be turned down. The bars are scared of doing that.”"

Our team have made their final visit to Te Hiku Hauora for 2025!

Peter and Suzanne enjoyed getting to see new whanau as well as fitting hearing aids for some existing clients. Our collaboration with our friends at Te Hiku Hauora has been a real highlight of 2025, what a great chance to support folks with hearing loss in Kaitaia.

The team will be back up North in February 2026, be sure to get in touch with the reception team at Te Hiku Hauora if you're based in Kaitaia and would like some help with your hearing.

Donating hearing aids that are superfluous to your needs may be on your radar if you have recently upgraded your hearing aids, or a loved one has passed away.

As a registered charity, we are able to use donated hearing accessories to help the community; whether that's a full set of hearing aids, a few cards of batteries, or anything in between.
