We are thinking beyond eye care.

At Auckland Eye, we’re committed not only to excellence in eye care, but also to the protection of your information. All our systems operate under rigorous IT governance and security policies. We carry out regular cybersecurity testing to safeguard patient data and follow industry best practices.

Health New Zealand’s National Artificial Intelligence and Algorithm Expert Advisory Group (NAIAEAG) takes a cautious approach to generative AI in healthcare due to risks such as privacy breaches, inaccuracies, bias, lack of transparency, and data sovereignty concerns. They do not endorse the use of unapproved AI tools for clinical decisions, personalised advice, or any patient-sensitive information.

In line with this guidance, we adopt only AI technologies that have undergone thorough privacy, security, and compliance reviews. One such tool is Heidi AI Scribe (enterprise version), which NAIAEAG has endorsed as meeting their safety and security standards. Its controlled use helps our clinicians document accurately and efficiently, without compromising your data.

If you have any questions or concerns at any stage of your eye care journey, please let us know. Your feedback helps us continue to deliver safe, trusted, patient-centred care.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a highly specialised procedure where surgeon expertise, safety standards, and follow-up care play a critical role in outcomes.

🔹What to consider
Many patients consider travelling overseas for surgery due to perceived cost savings. While many international clinics are safe, there are important differences to carefully weigh up before making a decision.

🔹Blepharoplasty in New Zealand
Having blepharoplasty performed in New Zealand offers several advantages. Local procedures are carried out under high regulatory and safety standards, with thorough consultations and personalised assessments. Patients benefit from easier access to pre- and post-operative care, ongoing follow-up, clear communication, and continuity of care throughout healing. Local surgery also reduces risks associated with long-distance travel after surgery, and surgeons are readily available to manage any complications should they arise.

🔹Blepharoplasty overseas
International surgery may appear more affordable initially, but standards of training and regulation can vary between countries. Follow-up care may be limited once patients return home, making complication management more complex. Travelling soon after surgery can increase swelling and discomfort, and additional costs such as flights, accommodation, and extended recovery time are often overlooked. Potential side effects may not be covered by your health insurance if your surgery is done overseas, so it’s important to check with your health insurance provider.

🔹Making the right choice
Blepharoplasty is not simply a cosmetic procedure. It involves delicate eye structures and important functional considerations. Choosing where to have surgery should be based on safety, surgeon expertise, and long-term care, not cost alone.

For many patients, having blepharoplasty performed locally provides reassurance, continuity, and peace of mind throughout the entire treatment journey.

Red, bloodshot eyes are something most of us experience at some point. Whether it’s after a late night, long hours on screens, or sudden irritation, red eyes are common, and often settle on their own.

In some cases, though, redness can signal a more serious eye condition that requires prompt attention. Knowing the difference can play an important role in protecting both your vision and long-term eye health.

Our latest blog explores why red eyes happen and when it’s time to see an ophthalmologist.

Strabismus occurs when the brain can’t properly control the muscles around the eye, causing the eyes to misalign. While it often appears in infancy or childhood, it can also develop later in life.

🔹Causes & Risk Factors
In adults, strabismus may be linked to serious medical conditions such as stroke, brain tumour, head injury, or other neurological conditions.

🔹Symptoms & Diagnosis
When the eyes are not working in sync, the brain may struggle to combine images from both eyes into a single image. This can lead to double vision and problems with depth perception, affecting daily activities and confidence. Strabismus can also result in amblyopia, where vision in one eye weakens over time.

Diagnosis involves visual testing and a physical examination of the eyes to assess alignment and function.

🔹Treatment Options
Treatment options depend on the cause and severity. Glasses may help correct vision and improve alignment. Patching can strengthen a weaker eye by covering the stronger eye for several months. Botulinum toxin (Botox®) may be used to temporarily weaken eye muscles for alignment, typically lasting two to three months, especially when surgery isn’t an option. Surgical treatment can loosen or reposition eye muscles and has a success rate of around 70 percent.

Being told to wait for laser eye surgery doesn’t mean you’re not a candidate, it simply means your eyes may not be ready yet.

1. Your prescription needs to be stable, age can play a role, and every eye develops at its own pace. Our surgeons will only proceed when the timing is right for your vision and long-term results.

2. Your prescription has recently changed.
Your vision needs to be stable for at least two years, so that your results remain consistent.

3. You’ve been wearing contact lenses.
Contacts can temporarily change the shape of your cornea, so you’ll need to leave them out for a day before your assessment. If you are a hard or ortho K contact lens wearer then you will need a longer period without them

4. You’re under 18.
Younger eyes are still changing, which means your prescription might not yet be stable. Waiting ensures your results are accurate and long-lasting.

5. You’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
Hormonal changes can temporarily affect your vision, so your surgeon may recommend waiting a few months after breastfeeding has finished.

No one likes to wait. However, laser eye surgery is a once-in-a-lifetime decision for many people. Taking the time to do it right means your results will be safer, more accurate, and more durable. A little patience now can mean decades of clear, independent vision.

At Auckland Eye, we take a personalised approach to every patient’s laser vision journey. If you’re thinking about laser eye surgery, our team will guide you through the assessment process, discuss your unique timeline, and help you understand what to expect.

31/12/2025

Annual eye exams help protect both your vision and your overall eye health.
Many eye conditions develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms.

🔹Why are annual eye exams important?
Regular check-ups allow changes to be identified early, when treatment is most effective.

🔹What can annual eye exams detect?
A comprehensive eye exam can detect changes in vision and early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye. In some cases, eye exams may also reveal broader health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Even if your vision feels fine, regular eye exams are essential. Booking an annual appointment with your optometrist helps maintain clear vision, supports long-term eye health, and gives you peace of mind.
