As the leaves change and the weather gets colder, it’s important to look after your eyes this Autumn.

HOW AUTUMN AFFECTS YOUR EYES
Autumn leaves, while beautiful, can cause eye problems. As the leaves decompose, they release mold and fungal spores into the air, which some people are allergic to.

Additionally, the shift in temperature can cause other issues, especially for those with dry eyes. More indoor heating means drier air, and more time spent inside puts further strain on the eyes.

DRY EYES OR ALLERGIES?
Distinguishing between Dry Eye and allergies can be challenging due to similar symptoms.

The presence of itchiness is a telltale sign of allergies. If itching is accompanied by sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and watery eyes, it is likely a case of autumn allergies.

Floaters are tiny translucent spots or strands that drift across your vision, caused by small clumps in the eye’s gel-like center (the vitreous body).

While often a normal part of ageing, a sudden increase can signal a serious eye problem and should be checked by an ophthalmologist.

🔹Causes
As the vitreous ages, it becomes more watery and tiny clumps can form, casting shadows on the retina and creating floaters.

They’re often more noticeable against bright backgrounds or when your eyes move quickly.
Most are harmless, but a sudden increase can be a sign of retinal detachment and should be checked promptly.

🔹Treatment for larger options
If large floaters affect your vision, vitrectomy (VR) surgery may be recommended. This procedure involves draining the vitreous fluid from the eye and replacing it with a saline solution.

Any floaters are removed along with the fluid, and the body replaces the vitreous fluid in the weeks after surgery.

Amblyopia affects 2-3% of New Zealanders, and is often a sign of other issues, such as astigmatism, or myopia.

Amblyopia is caused by the brain favouring one eye over the other. Over time, this causes vision to worsen in the weaker eye, and the eye may begin to wonder.

Treatment for Amblyopia is quite simple, but may take a long time. Although most children will experience improved vision in a few weeks, it may take six months to two years for treatment.

At Auckland Eye, we offer world-class eye care. If you’re concerned about amblyopia affecting you or someone close to you, get in touch with our team today.

During the school holidays, kids have a lot more free-time on their hands. The problem is, that this often means more screen time, which might be harming your child’s vision.

🔹SCREEN TIME AND MYOPIA
Over the past few years, there has been an increase in myopia (near-sightedness) in children. Children with myopia are more likely to develop eye issues, such as cataracts or glaucoma, later in life.

This increase in myopia in children can be directly linked to one thing: screen time.

🔹PREVENTING MYOPIA
Reducing your child’s screentime can prevent myopia, and preserve their eye health in the long term. Here are some simple tips to help:

🔹Discuss the risks of screen use, and educate your child about how screen-time affects their health

🔹Aim to spend at least two hours a day playing outside

🔹When using screens, take breaks every 20 minutes

🔹Regularly test vision to spot early signs of myopia

Do you have any tips for reducing screen time these holidays? Let us know in the comments

Macular Degeneration can strip you of healthy sight. The best way to combat MD is early detection, and monitoring. Read more to find out just what Macular Degeneration is, and how to prevent it.

Macular degeneration (MD) is a condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed vision.
It comes in two forms:
🔹Dry macular degeneration is the most common form. The macular gradually thins over time, causing slow progressive changes in central vision.
🔹Wet macular degeneration is less common but more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing sudden and rapid vision changes.

What are the symptoms?
🔹Objects appear blurry or faded
🔹Straight lines seem wavy or distorted
🔹A white spot in the middle of your field of vision
🔹A dark area obscures the centre of your vision
🔹Washed-out print when reading
In the early stages, particularly with dry MD, there may be few noticeable symptoms. Wet MD can cause more sudden changes in vision.

What are the treatment options?
Currently, there’s no effective treatment for dry MD, but research and clinical trials are ongoing, including at Auckland Eye.

For wet MD, treatment often involves anti-VEGF eye injections to slow or prevent vision loss, and sometimes laser or photodynamic therapy if needed.

Early detection and monitoring are key to accessing the right care. If you notice changes in your eyesight, speak to your healthcare provider immediately.

While it might seem like a simple question, the eye is an amazingly complex organ!
Eyes have evolved independently in many species, with different organisms developing entirely unique ways to see.

At the simplest level, an eye is a light-sensitive organ that allows an organism to respond to its environment.

In humans, the eye is made up of several complicated structures that all work together to help you see.

The cornea, lens, and vitreous body work together to let light in and focus it into clear images.

Your macula, retina, and optic nerve are able to then turn that light into signals, which are carried to your brain, allowing you to see!
