It was a privilege to welcome the kaimahi from Hoani Waititi Marae to Hospice House recently. Grounded in Māori values, this visit reflected the reciprocity of manaakitanga shared between us and strengthened our whanaungatanga as we begin to explore ways we can support each other’s kaupapa. Together, we share the common goal of ensuring more of our Māori whānau feel welcomed, supported, and connected to our services.

Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.

What a great start to the year at our Poi Quarterly Networking Event!

Our sincere thanks to everyone who joined us, and especially to the amazing team at Green Bay Community House for hosting us so warmly. A big thank you as well to our friends at Morrison’s Funeral Home for the delicious afternoon tea.

It was wonderful to see so many of you there, coming together to support each other and strengthen a connected community of care for those who need it most.

We were also privileged to hear from our guest speaker, Aumua Rosetta Fuimaono, who shared an informative and inspiring presentation about the incredible work she and her colleagues are doing to develop and promote services for older people in the Whau Local Board area.

We look forward to continuing this important mahi together.

Our heartfelt thanks to the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) for their generous grant funding our new ultrasound machine and essential consumables.

This equipment will make a huge difference for our patients, reducing wait times for imaging and allowing us to diagnose symptoms more quickly and accurately.

We are incredibly grateful for the NZ Community Trust’s support and commitment to improving the care we provide to our community.

Ngā mihi nui, NZCT.

We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to A Supported Life for creating these stunning Whakawātea Blessing Bowls for our He Whare Korowai – Home From Home facility. These woodfired ceramic taonga, featuring unique designs in beautiful blue and turquoise glazes, took several months for a team of six (led by the talented Steve) to create. It was a pleasure to meet Ruben and Jared from that creative team to receive and bless these wonderful gifts.

These bowls are used as part of our Poroporoaki Final Farewell. Filled with water and placed outside the room after someone has passed in our whare, they provide a space for whānau, kaimahi, and manuhiri to cleanse and whakanoa as they leave that sacred space. They help us honour the mana and memory of the life cared for, while gently preparing the room for those who will follow.

Your gift helps us care for people and their whānau in some of the most tender moments of their lives. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.

We are extremely grateful to Harcourts Foundation New Zealand for their generous grant for two desktop Sphygmomanometers, four hand-held Sphygmomanometers and two cuffs.

“The diagnostic equipment generously donated by Harcourts allows our team to effectively assess patients in the community, including evaluating the effects of medications and identifying potential palliative care emergencies. It will significantly enhance quality of care, with greater comfort and reassurance for both patients and their families,” says Stella McFarlane, GM Healthcare Services at Hospice West Auckland.

Thank you, once again, for your continued support that allows us to provide quality care to those in need in our West Auckland community - we truly appreciate it.
