Congratulations to our newest lifeguards at Karekare who qualified at Red Beach on Saturday 13 December. We look forward to seeing these young guards in their yellow and red between the flags soon. Special thanks to their families for getting them along to the training, their instructors Steve, Hannah and Oscar. Well done Grace, Orlo, Mara and Georgiana.

the 13th was a busy day, we also had a team of 7 at Muriwai completing their IRB crewpersons module. Thanks to the team of drivers, examiners and instructors. Especially Rob, Shay, Jim and Fraser. Congrats to Hayley, Tara, Callan, Laura, Sabine, Sebastian and Kasim.

Well done to our patrol this weekend who had a very busy Sunday. With 76 juniors on the beach they responded to a medical emergency in the carpark of a young boy and dealt with him in the first aid room until the ambulance arrived.

At the same time we were hosting a finishing school for our rookies who will sit their exam next week.

Well done to patrol 2 for managing the beach well, particularly with difficult sea conditions at the moment.

Karekare is running a number of rips and swimming is not advised unless lifeguards are on duty with a flagged area.

Paid lifeguards start Monday 22 December till first week of february and volunteers are on duty 11am-5pm on the weekends at rhe moment.

See you at the beach soon.

Congrats to our rookie swimmers who passed their pool exam tonight. Thx to our instructor Steve and the great support team. Also to the examiners for giving up their Friday night! Next stop red beach for the beach exam next weekend!

Great work by our off duty lifeguards yesterday who rescued a couple of boogie boards in the evening who got caught in a very nasty rip. Thanks to the surfing crew who are members who assisted. Remember, if you see someone in trouble first thing call 111, ask for Police and they will task local lifeguards.

We still have one month till Paid Lifeguards start at Karekare so we recommend people only swim during the flags on the weekend. Paid guards are on duty at Muriwai and Piha from this week.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Geoge Taua, of Te Kawerau Maki.

Sir Bob was honoured to be part of the farewell and Tangi representing our Club. As mentor and Kaumatua "Uncle George " George Taua was a most respected and deeply loved friend of the Karekare surf Club.

Bob was seated at the huge tangi as our club's senior elder and represented The Karekare Community.

George was part of our rebuilding programme, he advised us on our Pou Carvers and after much thought gave the building its Maori name Kaha Ropi.
