Supporting your people starts with a conversation
Behind every score is a person.

The K10 isn’t about labelling, it’s about opening the door to support.

Used correctly, it can:

• Encourage safe, confidential conversations
• Connect employees to EAP or professional support
• Show your team that their wellbeing genuinely matters

And often, that first step is the most important one.

👉 Reflect: Would your people feel comfortable asking for help today?

From wellbeing initiative to a measurable strategy

Many organisations invest in wellbeing programmes… but how do you know if they’re actually working?

The K10 allows you to:

✔ Establish a baseline
✔ Track changes over time
✔ Measure the impact of your initiatives

Because wellbeing shouldn’t just be a 'nice to have', it should be measurable, trackable, and actionable.

👉 For HR and H&S leaders:
Are your wellbeing initiatives delivering real insights, or just good intentions?

By the time stress becomes visible, it’s often already impacting performance, safety, and engagement.

Early detection = better outcomes

The K10 helps shift organisations from reactive → proactive.

✔ Identifies early warning signs
✔ Supports timely intervention
✔ Prevents escalation into more serious issues

It’s a short, 10-question tool that provides a snapshot of psychological wellbeing. A powerful starting point for action.

👉For leaders:

What would change if you could spot risk earlier?

What can’t be seen can still be measured.

Mental health risks don’t always show up in incident reports… but they are there.

The challenge for leaders? You can’t manage what you can’t see.

That’s where tools like the Kessler 10 (K10) come in, a simple, evidence-based questionnaire that helps identify early signs of psychological distress such as anxiety and depression.

In just a few minutes, you gain insight into what might otherwise go unnoticed.

If you're responsible for your team’s wellbeing, ask yourself:

Are we relying on assumptions… or actual data?

What if your flu shot could do more than just prevent the flu?

Yesterday, the Public Health Communication Centre shared something that should make every employer and leader pay attention.

👉 The seasonal flu vaccine doesn’t just reduce symptoms
👉 It can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by around one third

Let that sink in.

That level of protection is comparable to some commonly prescribed heart medications. And here’s the kicker… Influenza itself can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke up to six times in the following week.

💡 This changes the conversation. Flu vaccination isn’t just about avoiding a few sick days. It’s about preventing serious, life-threatening events.

For workplaces, this is a powerful reminder that:

✔️ Prevention matters
✔️ Early intervention matters
✔️ And having the right support in place matters

Because even with the best prevention… things can still happen.
And when they do, will your team know what to do?

➡️ Where in New Zealand can you support your team with both flu vaccinations AND life-saving First Aid training? Only LifeCare. Let's talk about how we can support your staff's wellbeing and risk management plan!

Today and tomorrow, LifeCare is proud to be a sponsor of the Brightstar Health and Safety Leaders Summit, joining professionals from across Aotearoa who are committed to building safer and healthier workplaces.

Representing LifeCare at the event are Reuben Turner and Jonathan Tweedie, who are connecting with industry leaders and sharing insights on how organisations can better support the wellbeing of their people.

The discussions so far have highlighted some critical topics shaping the future of health and safety in New Zealand.

The WorkSafe update from Kelly Hanson-White provided valuable reflections on the past 12 months, including recent cases, regulatory priorities, and the direction WorkSafe is taking to help create safer, healthier and more resilient workplaces.

Another powerful session, “Leading from the Top”, brought together executives from organisations such as Site Safe, Port of Auckland, among others, to discuss how leadership commitment drives strong health and safety cultures. The panel explored how trust, accountability, and continuous improvement are essential for organisations navigating increasing expectations from regulators, boards and stakeholders.

We also heard important legal insights from Grant Nicholson from Anthony Harper, who shared lessons from key health and safety cases in 2025 and what duty holders should be preparing for as we move into 2026.

These conversations reinforce how critical leadership, compliance, and proactive health and safety strategies are for organisations in New Zealand.

If you’re attending the Health and Safety Leaders Summit, make sure to say hello to Reuben and Jono, they would love to connect.

🏆 Employee of the Month - Jonathan Tweedie 🏆

At LifeCare, we run an Employee of the Month Award as a way to recognise the people who go above and beyond. Peer-nominated, leadership-supported, and voted on by the team.

This month’s winner was described (very affectionately) as a terrier 🐕
Energetic. Bold. Tenacious. And once focused on a goal?
Absolutely unstoppable!

After confidently committing to exceed his sales target before year-end, and then delivering well beyond expectations, this award couldn’t have gone to anyone more deserving.

Congratulations, Jono, our E-O-M 👏

Your drive, resilience and determination don’t go unnoticed. We’re lucky to have you on the team.

We’re excited to introduce Layne Kay, who has recently joined the LifeCare whānau as an Occupational Health Technician based in Dunedin.

Layne’s journey into health care started with a long‑standing interest in the sector. He holds a BSc in Genetics from the University of Otago and most recently worked in the disability sector, and prior to that in a Medical Laboratory.

Layne says that when the opportunity to join LifeCare came up, it felt like the perfect way to turn that interest into a meaningful career.

What Layne is enjoying most so far is meeting new people and getting exposure to a wide range of workplaces and environments. A highlight from the first weeks? “Definitely learning all the different equipment techniques, it’s been really interesting.”

Outside of work, Layne can usually be found attempting to fix a boat that stubbornly refuses to cooperate; a challenge that comes with equal parts frustration and humour!

The best piece of life advice Layne has ever received is simple yet grounding:
“As long as no one is being hurt, relax, it doesn’t matter.”

Coffee order: Flat white
Goal for the first year: “To do a good job and learn the role fully.”

We’re thrilled to have Layne on the team and can’t wait to see the impact and growth ahead. Here's Layne (on the left) with the team on the induction programme.

Depression doesn’t always look like someone breaking down. It can look like withdrawal, low energy, missed deadlines, or a quiet drop in confidence.

Left unrecognised, it affects safety, productivity, and team morale — especially in high-pressure or isolated roles.

Would your team feel safe telling you they’re struggling?

Mental health conditions don’t stay at home when people come to work.
They show up as fatigue, mistakes, absenteeism, presenteeism, and disengagement — often long before someone asks for help.

In Aotearoa, mental health challenges affect people in every industry and role, yet many workplaces still treat them as personal issues rather than shared risks.

💭 Reflection for leaders:
How confident are you that your workplace would notice the early signs?

Introducing Dylan Fynn — One of LifeCare’s Newest Team Members

Dylan joined LifeCare drawn to our preventative, evidence‑based approach, seeing it as the ideal place to put his background into practice across real workplaces. Now working across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region, he’s already immersing himself in the wide range of services LifeCare provides and is especially excited about getting out in the field and working directly with people.

While many know him as approachable and easy‑going, Dylan has a strong technical side; he’s detail‑focused and genuinely enjoys the precision involved in testing. Outside of work, you’ll find him at the gym, on the golf course, or catching up with friends and family.

If he weren’t in this career, Dylan imagines he’d still be working in the health or fitness space, likely in coaching, performance, or education. A piece of advice that’s always stuck with him is simple but powerful: be reliable, stay curious, and never be afraid to ask questions.

His first weeks at LifeCare have been defined by the warm welcome from the team and the hands‑on training that’s helped him settle in quickly. Looking ahead, Dylan hopes to become someone both the team and our clients can rely on, while continuing to grow his skills and confidence. Welcome to the team! 🙌
