Meet Barry, a retired farmer who now resides in Katikati in the Bay of Plenty 🤩

It’s been a year since Barry received his cochlear implant, and in this clip he shares his own reflections on the journey so far.

Barry talks honestly about the changes he’s experienced, including the difference between accessing sound with hearing aids and with a cochlear implant. His reflections offer a real-life perspective for anyone considering, or adjusting to, a cochlear implant.

Alongside Barry, his daughter Janine also shares her journey, reflecting on the family’s experience, the support around the process, and the impact that having a cochlear implant has had on Barry, their family's connection and everyday life.

At The Hearing House, we work to create a safe space for a wide range of experiences and support a multi-modal approach to communication for all our kiritaki/clients 💛

We celebrated a very special day at The Hearing House recently, with the switch-on of one of our youngest kiritaki/clients, six-month-old Louis Smith.

His mum Nicole says that after switch-on, Louis was more alert and curious as he took in the environment around him.

“He’s now turning towards sounds, which has been magical to see,” says Nicole.

“He’s back to his normal happy self, now just with the gift of hearing. We're so thankful!

“The team at The Hearing House have been so helpful in educating us on caring for Louis’ cochlear implants and have taken it step by step as to not overwhelm us.“

We first wrote about Louis’ journey last year, and it’s so exciting to see his growth and connection. You can read the full story here: https://www.hearinghouse.co.nz/single-post/baby-louis-hearing-journey-finding-connection-and-hope-at-the-hearing-house

“He has such a bright future,” says Nicole. “And we’re deeply thankful to The Hearing House for walking beside us every step of the way.”

For Tinnitus Awareness Week, we spoke with our amazing audiologist, Derek Hadfield, about how we can support people living with tinnitus — including cochlear implant users.

Tinnitus can affect concentration, sleep, and overall wellbeing, but with the right information and support, people don’t have to manage it alone.

Watch as Derek shares practical ways we can make a real difference for those living with tinnitus. 💙🎧

Ringing, buzzing, or other unexplained sounds in the ears can be a daily reality for many people — and it’s more common than you might think.

This week is Tinnitus Awareness Week, and The Hearing House is proud to help shine a light on this often misunderstood condition. Tinnitus affects millions of people worldwide and, for some, can significantly impact daily life and overall wellbeing.

To mark the week, we spoke with Professor Grant Searchfield from the University of Auckland, who shares insights into what tinnitus is, what causes it, and how it can be managed.

🌟Donate your unwanted equipment to help others!🌟

Sustainability is at the core of our business strategy at The Hearing House, and reusing and repurposing equipment is a key part of this.

It’s wonderful to have a pool of donated parts and devices, including processors, dry boxes and cords, that we can clean, check and then pass on to other kiritaki/clients to use as backups or replacements.

Thanks to these donations – many of our kiritaki have been able to receive upgraded equipment which represents a huge saving for many people.

Please contact us on 09 579 2333 or email equipment@hearinghouse.co.nz if you have equipment you’d like to donate – you can either drop it into us, or we can arrange collection.

Thank you for your ✅ for sustainability!!

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Linda, Natasha’s mum, to the Hearing House! 🌟

Natasha, who is an incredible part of the Deaf Aotearoa team, has been instrumental in supporting our community and helping make The Hearing House a welcoming place for everyone.

Linda traveled all the way from South Africa to visit, and it was such a joy to catch up with her, hear their stories, and learn more about the experiences that have shaped Natasha’s journey. Visits like this are a wonderful reminder of the connections, family ties, and personal stories that make our work here so meaningful. 💛
