Honouring a Pacific Advocate: Professor Tim Draycott

With deep sadness, the Pacific Society for Reproductive Health (PSRH) shares our heartfelt tribute to Professor Tim Draycott.

Tim was an extraordinary clinician, educator, and global leader whose work transformed maternity care across the world, including here in the Pacific.
Tim understood the realities of providing care in resource-limited and geographically isolated settings better than most. His combination of clinical excellence, humility, practicality, and genuine partnership made him a rare and deeply respected figure across our region.

Tim had a long-standing relationship with PSRH and with our PEMNeT programme. He championed our Pacific workforce every step of the way. His support enabled the adaptation of resources from the PROMPT Maternity Foundation for Pacific use, ensuring that our training was culturally grounded, context-appropriate, and achievable in real-world conditions. This contribution continues to shape emergency maternal care across our island nations.

Our PEMNeT team expressed it beautifully: he made us feel seen, valued, and cared for — not as a small corner of the world, but as partners with something important to offer. His kindness, humour, and the unforgettable energy he brought to our cultural nights remain among our favourite memories.

Rajat Gyaneshwar also captured Tim’s unique gift: his ability to empower Pacific nurses and doctors, build teamwork, and lift clinical capacity while keeping joy, collegiality, and respect at the heart of every interaction.

On a personal note, Tim’s advocacy extended beyond programmes — he consistently used his platform to elevate Pacific voices in international spaces. His nomination and presentation during my entry as an Honorary Fellow of the RCOG was another example of how committed he was to ensure that Pacific work, Pacific leadership, and Pacific contribution were recognised at the highest levels. That was the essence of Tim: always championing the Pacific, and always ensuring our region was represented, respected, and heard.

Tim’s loss leaves a large void — for his family, for the PROMPT Maternity Foundation, and for all who loved and learned from him. Here in the Pacific, his legacy lives on through stronger, more confident teams; safer care for women and babies; and a workforce he helped uplift with sincerity and heart.

On behalf of the PSRH Board, membership, and the wider Pacific SRH community, we honour Tim’s life, his friendship, and his extraordinary contribution to our region.

May he rest in peace.

Kia orana, Talofa lava, Bula vinaka, Monin tru, and Fakaalofa lahi atu.
Our final PSRH webinar for 2025 wrapped up last night, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our members, colleagues, and Pacific partners who joined us throughout the year.

As we head into the holidays, may you find rest, gentleness, and renewed purpose.
And if you’re not yet a PSRH member, we warmly invite you to join us in 2026. https://psrh.org.nz/membership/
