A Powerful Moment in Auckland: Indigenous Chiefs Unite for Education
Auckland made history this week as it hosted the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE) — the largest global gathering dedicated entirely to Indigenous learning, leadership, and the sharing of knowledge systems. Among the many nations represented, the Hawaiian chiefs and cultural leaders drew widespread attention as they marched through the heart of Auckland, bringing with them the strength, pride, and deep ancestral mana of their people.
This conference brought together thousands of Indigenous educators, elders, youth, scholars, and cultural practitioners from every corner of the world. Their purpose: to share ideas, expand opportunities, strengthen language revitalisation, uplift Indigenous-led education models, and protect cultural futures.
The march through Auckland’s CBD symbolised unity between nations — Māori, Pasifika, First Nations, Native American, Aboriginal, Hawaiian, and many more — all walking side-by-side in celebration of identity, sovereignty, and intergenerational knowledge.
New Zealand’s hosting of WIPCE highlights the country’s role as a global leader in Indigenous education. The energy, colour, and cultural pride on display will be remembered for years to come.
