Do you know what breast density is, and why it's important?

Not all breasts are the same - around 40% of women have dense breasts, which means they have more fibrous and glandular tissue than fat.

Dense tissue shows up white on a mammogram (just like many cancers), making it harder to spot anything unusual, and it’s also linked to a slightly higher risk of breast cancer - so sometimes extra imaging is needed.

"At Allevia Breast Imaging, every mammogram includes a breast density assessment, which is reported by the radiologist. The radiologist will inform you if your breasts are extremely dense and if you need additional imaging for screening.” says Sugania Reddy, Lead Radiologist - Breast Imaging.

Our commitment to a cleaner Earth ♻️

At Allevia Radiology, we're doing as much as we can to benefit the environment, by changing the way we do things, such as:

♻️Getting a Certified carbon reduction from Toitū.

♻️Switching to renewable energy at the majority of our facilities.

♻️Smarter energy use, like auto-shutdowns of PCs and ongoing energy audits to see where we can reduce electricity use.

♻️ Reducing waste in every area by utilising a digital-first approach to forms, colour-coded bins and more.

♻️Cutting down on paper by making our systems more efficient and more sustainable.

2D vs 3D Mammography: What's the difference?

When it comes to breast cancer screening, not all mammograms are the same.

A 2D mammogram takes two flat X-ray images of each breast: one from the top and one from the side - whereas a 3D mammogram, often known as breast tomosynthesis, is a more advanced screening mammogram, as the machine takes multiple images of the breast from different angles.

Whilst both methods are effective, dense breast tissue can make cancers harder to detect on a traditional 2D mammogram - therefore, 3D mammography improves visibility and reduces uncertainty for patients.
