DoingOT

DoingOT Occupational therapy for children who need coaching to do what they want to do, need to do and are expected to do. At home, school and the community.

Occupational therapy focuses on the day-to-day activities relevant to a child's developmental age and interests. Occupational therapy promotes positive emotional wellbeing, prevents mental health issues developing or restores mental health and wellbeing. Because occupational therapy is activity-focused it appeals to a range of ages: from very young who struggle to understand complex concepts in discussion, to adolescents who may be reluctant to engage in talking therapies. Occupational therapy is a non-threatening modality for approaching challenging situations and enabling children to reach their potential. Some ways that occupational therapy can help:

* Coach a child with autism to participate in playground games

* Enable those with school related anxiety to return to school, including developing sleep hygiene skills

* Assess and develop motor skills, including fine motor skills (such as handwriting) or gross motor skills affected by Dyspraxia

Tip #4

What did you DO that was different over the holiday season, that makes life feel more relaxed/festive/enjoyable? Find a way to incorporate DOing this same thing in the next few weeks and notice how you feel afterwards.

Tip #32

We seem to readily accept how what we DO changes with the seasons - what we DO in winter is different to what we DO in summer. Our environment impacts significantly on our DOing. Do you notice any of the environments you find yourself in that try to inhibit or prevent you from DOing when/how you would like? (e.g. home, work, recreation environments) Can you identify ways this could be different?

Tip #15

Are you an active or a passive relaxer? Do you feel more relaxed when you are ‘in the flow’ of an engaging and meaningful activity or when you are not engaged in any specific activity, merely observing (thoughts, feelings, sensations etc). Notice how often you feel relaxed in a day. Would you like this to be different somehow?

Tip #19

With Autumn fast approaching it is a time of change and transition. When you are experiencing a change or transition, how does your participation or engagement with daily activities change? Maybe you DO more – in an effort to be prepared or to lessen anxieties? Maybe you DO less – in a state of denial or take a contemplative ‘wait and see’ approach? Maybe you DO differently – and see change as an opportunity to experiment or test limits? Take some time to notice how you DO in response to change...
