North Piha Lifeguard Service has protected the lives of those who visit North Piha for over 50years. United North Piha Lifeguard Service was created in 1973 as the result of the amalgamation of North Piha Surf Club and Eastern United Surf Club from Browns Bay. Like most Surf Lifesaving Clubs throughout New Zealand United North Piha's beginnings were the result of a few determined genuinely caring citizens. The drive to Piha back in the 1940's until the 1970's was a dust chocked narrow metal road in summer and a slippery mud bath in winter. Those harty volunteers would often travel out on a Friday evening and patrol for the entire weekend. Todays volunteers whip over the hills in airconditioned cars in less than 30 minutes from Henderson. There was a great need for a club house. Local identity Les Waygood donated land, locals and members fund raised and lobied for materials to build the club house which still stands today but in a modified form.

Rips often look like calm, darker patches or channels in the water with fewer breaking waves but don’t be fooled.

It might look inviting, but that calm patch is a strong current heading out to sea and can catch out even confident swimmers.

If you’re caught, stay calm, float and signal for help. Remember the safest place to swim is always between the flags.

Such a fun way to wrap up junior surf for 2025! 🌊

It was all about getting in the water and enjoying the beach together. We even had a surprise visit from Santa, who arrived in style on his IRB sleigh for a lolly scramble!

While training is done for the year, we’re still excited to be seeing plenty of our juniors around the club over summer ☀️

Always good to work along side our community to help educate and promote enjoying our beach safely 💙💛

Congratulations to our seven newly qualified IRB crewmen! 👏

Over the weekend, Laila, Ava, Maddi, Tia, Kingston, Theo and Ollie completed their IRB crewman training, covering both practical skills and theory, and successfully passed their exam on Sunday.

A big thank you to Natalie for examining and Toby for supporting the training as our driver.

It’s great to see our crew continuing to build strong skills across the club ⚡️

Congratulations to Kate Adolph and Rosie Davis as two of only 20 candidates selected nationwide for SLSNZ’s National Lifeguard School! Shout out to our very own Dan Short who was also named in the instructor team⚡️

Over four days at Mt Maunganui, they’ll tackle advanced rescue skills, leadership training, mass rescue scenarios, first aid, search & rescue and more.

These lifeguards are truly some of the best of the best, and we’re so proud to see them take on this challenge and represent United 💙💛

An action-packed Labour Weekend set the tone for an exciting season ahead! ⚡️

The club was absolutely buzzing with refresher day, first patrols, and plenty of training across IRBs, bronzies, rookies, and junior surf.

Despite the windy conditions, it was fantastic to see so many members getting involved, reconnecting, and getting this summer season underway 💙💛

Our first IRB driver training of the season kicked off today! ⚡️ Despite variable winds and low tide, our candidates handled the challenging conditions with confidence. They showed great enthusiasm in the water, and we can’t wait to see them driving on patrols soon! 🙌

Huge congratulations to Brianna Gleeson who has been selected as a candidate for the 2025–26 bp Leaders for Life programme - we couldn’t be prouder! ⚡️

Leaders for Life is Surf Life Saving NZ’s leadership development programme, designed to grow confident, community-minded leaders who are ready to step up both on and off the beach - and it’s a big deal to be selected!

Shout out to United guards Dan Short and Victoria Mulrennan who have also been selected as mentors for the programme, helping candidates like Brie through their leadership journey 💙💛

We’re stoked to see our United whānau representing at all levels of surf lifesaving 💪🏼

At United, all flags raised, and rescue made is thanks to volunteers. Our club runs entirely on donated time from patrols to trainings, from board meetings to the everyday mahi that keeps the club ticking.

This Volunteer Week, we want to thank all volunteers and shout out to every surf club around Aotearoa for the incredible work they do. We are stoked to be a part of this nationwide community ⚡️

To all of you who give your time, your energy, and your heart, this week is celebrating you 💙💛
