Funeral Directors Josephine, Stella and Millie recently helped our partners at Starship Foundation out by packing stockings for children that are in hospital. There was a room full of donated gifts and they were given Santa sacks with the name, age and gender of the child they were packing for on it. Then they got to go crazy, filling the sacks with the things they thought that child would like. ‘Santa’ then took them and delivered them to the children on the ward. The ladies felt so rewarded, knowing they had helped in some way to spread Christmas cheer.

On December 3, we held our Davis Funerals Christmas Memorial Service, and we’re still feeling incredibly grateful.

Even with wild weather rolling in, a stormy, rainy night, around 115 people joined us to pause, reflect, and remember. There was something quietly powerful about seeing the room filled with familiar faces… and especially meaningful knowing many families have come back for their second and third year in a row. That kind of return reminds us what this service means: a safe, gentle place to honour those we’re missing at Christmas.

We’d also like to sincerely acknowledge a few special people who helped make the evening what it was, all giving their time and care voluntarily, which is an extraordinary gift:

❤️ Celebrant: Keith King

❤️ Organist: Bruce McGrail

❤️ Catering: Gattings - gattings.co.nz

Thank you for showing up with such generosity and care Please consider giving them a follow and a thank you as well.

To everyone who joined us, whether you came with family, a friend, or quietly on your own, thank you for trusting us with your memories.

Lights to Remember | An Evening of Love & Light ❤️

The grounds of Te Korowai Atawhai Mercy Hospice glowed with something far deeper than Christmas lights, they glowed with remembrance.

Davis Funerals is proud to sponsor Lights to Remember, a truly special community event where families and friends gather to pause, reflect, and honour those we carry with us. With a beautiful choir, a moving violin performance, and heartfelt words from Mike from Davis Funerals, the evening reminded us that love doesn’t end, it changes shape, and it stays.

Throughout December, selected trees at Mercy Hospice are adorned with thousands of cascading lights, each one representing an enduring bond with a loved one. When you dedicate a light, you’re not only creating a tribute, you’re also helping Mercy Hospice continue supporting people and families facing life-limiting illness.

Since 2021, supporters have gathered in early December for this magical switch-on: an evening of light, music, community, and gentle remembering.

The Davis team were back in action, helping out at Hospice West Auckland last week. Weeding and tidying; making sure the Rongoā garden is looking beautiful for the opening of He Whare Korowai - Home From Home, a new service that will provide 24/7 care in West Auckland later this week.

General Manager Mike Powell and the team from our Henderson branch are featuring on the cover of the November issue of the Kumeu Courier.
Our article this month is in relation to a comment that appears from time to time in the news. This is the reference to “Corporate Funeral Homes vs. Family-Owned funeral homes”. Is there really a difference? Is it really a point of differentiation? For a family dealing with a death, does it really matter? We’re thrilled to welcome Davis Funerals as an official funding partner of Tōtara Hospice! 💛

Their support has been unwavering since the very first Long Lunch in 2012, and now, this partnership reaches a new milestone — supporting not just our largest annual fundraiser, but also the Talanoa group programme, volunteer outreach, and knowledge sharing initiatives.

“This milestone is a testimony to both organisations’ shared commitment to be a beacon of hope, comfort and support to those in the community when they need it most.” – Michael Powell, General Manager, Davis Funerals

Thank you, Davis Funerals, for walking alongside us in our mission, to Make the World a Better Place for Dying People© 🙌

Tide and time wait for no man” or does it?

The death of someone close, inevitably brings with it a profound sense of loss. Whilst heightened in situations of a sudden or unexpected death, nonetheless it is experienced equally in situations where the death was anticipated or expected. A little-known fact is that for most people, throughout their lifetime, they may only ever be responsible for managing the events surrounding the death of someone close perhaps once or twice.

Farewell planning and all that it entails is therefore something that fortunately none of us really get practiced at, unless of course you are a funeral director.

We had a full house yesterday when we visited Parkside Village to talk about death and funeral care. After a lively session with lots of interesting questions, Mike, Karen and Catherine joined the group for afternoon tea and managed to chat to almost everyone!

Many people commented that they were apprehensive about attending the session but were so glad that they had because now they felt they had the correct knowledge and information to start planning what they would like to happen for themselves when the time comes.

At Davis, this is what our community outreach programme is all about, making sure people know the options available, the choices they will need to make and to dispel the myths that are so often perpetuated in the media.

If you would like to find out more, give us a call and we can arrange for you to meet with a funeral director at your home or at one of our 5 branches across Auckland. This is of course free and no obligation.

As the country has lived through the grip of the current recession, a key focus for all New Zealanders has been every increasing cost of living. Whether it is petrol and other utility costs, or just the daily cost of life, everything seems to be more expensive. This has also given rise for some commentary around the cost of funerals, and for some, to even question whether a funeral is even necessary in 2025.

Here at Davis, we firmly believe that a meaningful farewell is an essential step in recognising the end of a loved one’s physical life, and to assist that transition to the emotional abyss of life without that person.
