Today, DSS have announced that the purchasing rules for flexible funding no longer apply – giving people more choice and control to use their flexible funding on supports that work for them.

From 1 April, disabled people who get flexible funding will have more choice and control over how they use their funding.

The purchasing rules for flexible funding – including the March 2024 changes – no longer apply.
Flexible funding must still be used in line with people’s funding plans, budgets and disability support needs – but people will have more flexibility to choose supports that work for them, including respite options for carers.

A small number of items will remain prohibited or require pre-approval before spending.
People’s allocated budgets for flexible funding will stay the same – they will not change on 1 April.

There will be guidance for people to plan and manage their flexible funding. People with hosted flexible funding can expect to hear from their host about this.

These changes reflect feedback from the disability community.

They build on work to improve the way people’s needs are assessed, bring more consistency to funding decisions and stabilise the disability support system – making it possible to remove the purchasing rules and maintain people’s current funding.

There is more information on the DSS website: www.disabilitysupport.govt.nz/flexible-funding

Last Tuesday, Nijaya spent the day with Shore Junction in Takapuna, Auckland for Open Doors Day. Nijaya stated "It went well, I installed the latest [updates] in all desktops [and laptops] to ensure they are running smoothly. Conin and Lewis have shown me how to do these tasks to ensure the Shore Junction keeps running."

I.Lead's latest project, Open Doors Day, encourages businesses from across the motu to open their doors to a disabled employee for a day. Because it shouldn't be ODD to see disabled youth in employment!
This event allows I.Lead members the opportunity to enter an industry they are interested in, volunteering their time for a day.

With a focus on empowering both rangatahi whaikaha and businesses, Open your Doors Day (ODD) will be an annual initiative, proving that hiring disabled people does not have to be scary or odd. Keep an eye out for Open Doors Day 2027!

Last Tuesday, Ashe spent the day with Kimberly from Lucky in Love Weddings in Auckland for Open Doors Day. Since Ashe is passionate about planning weddings that are inclusive of both disabilities and lgbtq+, Ashe loved getting to spend the day getting a behind-the-scenes look at the wedding industry.

Te Ara Tāne: The Path of Men

We’re creating a space where disabled men (18-30) can come together, be real, and have honest kōrero about the ups and downs of life — the stuff people don’t always talk about. Whether it’s about identity, relationships, mental health, or just everyday challenges, this is a space where you’ll be heard and understood.

This group was designed by disabled men, for disabled men — no pressure, no judgement, just a chance to connect, listen, and be yourself.

Come along. Your story matters. Your voice belongs here.

Our next meeting date is April 21st
