🛡️ HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR FLU VACCINE YET? 💉

Flu season is around the corner, and now’s the best time to prepare.

While it may be mild for some, the flu can lead to serious illness and hospitalisation, even in otherwise healthy people.

Those most at risk include:

👵 Older adults
The vaccine is funded for those 65+. It can also help reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack, and support independent living.

🫁 People with underlying health conditions
Including diabetes, asthma, and heart disease.

👶 Pēpi and children under 5
Even healthy tamariki can become very unwell with the flu.

🤰 Pregnant people and their pēpi
The vaccine is safe, recommended, and free during pregnancy. It helps protect both you and your baby in those early months.

If you haven’t had your flu vaccine yet, don’t wait.

Get in touch with our team today to book your appointment and help protect yourself and your whānau this winter.

🤒 THE FLU HITS DIFFERENT 👨‍👩‍👧

They can feel similar at first, but the flu and a cold are very different.

A cold tends to come on slowly.

You might have:
• A runny nose
• A sore throat
• A mild cough

You can usually carry on with your day.

The flu is different. It hits harder and faster.

You’re more likely to have:
• Fever
• Body aches
• Extreme tiredness

It can leave you completely wiped out. And for some people, it can lead to serious illness.

That’s why getting the flu vaccine matters.

It helps protect you, and the people around you, too. Your whānau, your workmates, and your wider community.

Get in touch with our team to book your 2026 flu vaccine or to check if you’re eligible for a funded (no cost) vaccination.

⚠️ STRESS AWARENESS MONTH: KNOW THE SIGNS 💭

While April kicks off with April Fools’ Day, Stress Awareness Month is no joke.

That’s because the 2024/25 NZ Health Survey shows stress:

📊 Affects many New Zealanders (14.3% of adults experience high or very high distress)
📈 Has increased significantly in recent years (up from 7.4% in 2019/20)
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Is more common in young people (22.9%), Māori (22.5%), and Pacific peoples (23.8%)

Stress is our body’s natural response to pressure, but when it sticks around, it can start to affect your health and lead to:

• High blood pressure
• Obesity and diabetes
• Depression or anxiety
• Heart disease
• Muscle tension or headaches
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

If stress is affecting your daily life, talk to our team. We’re here to support you.

A quick check-in today can make a real difference. 💙

👁️ PROTECT YOUR VISION: CHECK FOR GLAUCOMA 🔍

March is Glaucoma Awareness Month, and it’s a timely reminder that glaucoma often develops without any early symptoms. That means you may not notice any changes to your sight until the condition has already progressed.

Vision loss from glaucoma is permanent, but early detection can help slow or prevent further damage.

The best way to protect your vision is through regular eye checks. An optometrist can assess your eye pressure, examine your optic nerve, and carry out simple tests to detect glaucoma early.

You may be at higher risk if you are over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, or have certain medical conditions. Even if your vision feels fine, it’s still important to get checked.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed or want to learn more about glaucoma, including testing and support, you can visit 👉 https://glaucoma.org.nz/about-glaucoma/

Remember, how you take care of your eyes now determines your vision in the future.

❄️ DON’T LET WINTER TRIGGER YOUR ASTHMA 🫁

Did you know asthma symptoms are often brought on by things in your environment?

Common triggers include pollen, pet dander, dust, smoke, cold air, temperature changes, and respiratory infections like colds or flu. Because many of these are more common in winter, asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath can flare up more easily.

That’s why one of the best ways to stay in control of asthma is by following a written Asthma Action Plan. This personalised plan is created with your healthcare provider and outlines what to do when your asthma is well controlled, getting worse, or becoming severe.

If you live with asthma, it’s a good idea to make sure your inhalers are up to date and that your asthma action plan is reviewed at least once a year.

🔎 HOW IS ENDOMETRIOSIS DIAGNOSED? 🩺

Endometriosis affects around 1 in 10 women and people assigned female at birth.

Unfortunately, there is currently no simple screening test that can diagnose it.

Diagnosis often begins with a conversation about what you’ve been experiencing. Your clinician may ask you to track your cycle over time, arrange imaging such as an ultrasound, and refer you to a specialist if further assessment is needed.

In many cases, clinicians may suspect endometriosis based on symptoms and imaging findings. However, the only way to definitively confirm endometriosis is through a minor surgical procedure called a laparoscopy.

Remember, severe period pain that affects your quality of life should not be normalised. If your symptoms are getting worse or stopping you from living your normal life, it’s worth having a kōrero (talk) with your clinician.

For many people, receiving an endometriosis diagnosis can bring relief and validation, and help guide the next steps in care and treatment.
