πŸ“… Save the date: World Continence Week 2026

World Continence Week will run 15–21 June 2026, and we’re already looking forward to another week of raising awareness about bladder and bowel health across Aotearoa.

Each year, the week is about starting conversations, reducing stigma, and sharing helpful information and resources.

Want to see what we’ve done in previous years?

We’d also like to thank Pub Charity, whose generous support is helping make our 2026 planning possible.

More details will be shared closer to the time β€” stay tuned!

Caring often starts with the small things – helping with shopping, housework, or the occasional appointment.

But sometimes, things change quickly. And caring can begin to affect every part of your life – your work, your relationships, your time, and your wellbeing.

πŸ’› If you’re feeling this shift, it might be time to look into a NASC assessment.

A NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination) assessment helps understand what support you and the person you care for may be eligible for – from home support to funded services.

You can ask your GP or healthcare provider for a referral, or contact your local NASC service directly:

Caring for someone with continence needs can be incredibly rewarding β€” but it can also feel very isolating.

Research from Carers NZ shows that 90% of family carers feel lonely, and many experience depression or anxiety.

If you’re caring for someone, please know this: you’re not the only one feeling this way, and support is available πŸ’›

Many carers feel like they’re thrown in the deep end when continence issues begin.

The night waking. The washing. The questions about dignity and where to find help.

But you don’t have to figure it out alone.

πŸ’‘ Some continence products in New Zealand may be publicly funded β€” usually following a continence assessment to understand individual needs.

A continence assessment is a conversation with a trained health professional to understand your needs and to create a personalised plan.

You can get one by asking your GP or nurse for a referral, or by contacting a local continence service provider

Bladder leakage isn’t just a post-baby problem.

Incontinence can affect people at many stages of life β€” even those who haven’t had children.

For example:
πŸƒ Stress incontinence is common in athletes
πŸšͺ Some people experience urgency triggers (like turning on a tap or unlocking the door)

If this happens to you, you’re not alone.

πŸŽ™οΈ We talk more about this in Episode 3 of The Pelvic Pod.

Bladder and bowel issues can feel isolating.

Because of stigma, many people feel like they’re the only one experiencing these symptoms β€” but they’re actually very common.

Talking about bladder and bowel health helps reduce that isolation.

Bladder urgency isn’t just physical β€” it can take up a lot of mental space.

Constantly planning around toilets or worrying about needing to leave early can make everyday life harder.

Learning to manage urgency can help take some of that pressure off.
Try pausing, taking a few slow breaths, and doing a few quick pelvic floor squeezes to help calm the urge.

And knowing where toilets are when you need them can make a difference too.

Your pelvic floor has three important jobs:

1️⃣ Helping you empty your bladder and bowels
2️⃣ Helping prevent leaks when you cough, sneeze, or exercise
3️⃣ Supporting sexual function and pleasure

Pelvic health physiotherapists help these muscles work well so you can empty properly, maintain continence, and stay comfortable.

Pelvic health isn’t just about strengthening.

First, it’s about learning where these muscles are and how to use them well β€” including:
😌 Relaxing the pelvic floor
🧠 Building awareness
🀧 Using them when you cough or sneeze

Learning to both engage and relax these muscles can make a big
difference.

Do you ever go to the toilet β€œjust in case”?

It’s a common habit β€” but over time your bladder can start to expect it.

Some healthier bladder habits include:

πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ Avoid β€œjust in case” weeing
⏳ Take your time on the toilet
🧘 Relax while emptying your bladder
πŸ₯› Keep drinking fluids

Small changes can make a big difference.
