Your pelvic floor has three important jobs:

1️⃣ Helping you empty your bladder and bowels
2️⃣ Helping prevent leaks when you cough, sneeze, or exercise
3️⃣ Supporting sexual function and pleasure

Pelvic health physiotherapists help these muscles work well so you can empty properly, maintain continence, and stay comfortable.

Pelvic health isn’t just about strengthening.

First, it’s about learning where these muscles are and how to use them well — including:
😌 Relaxing the pelvic floor
🧠 Building awareness
🤧 Using them when you cough or sneeze

Learning to both engage and relax these muscles can make a big
difference.

Do you ever go to the toilet “just in case”?

It’s a common habit — but over time your bladder can start to expect it.

Some healthier bladder habits include:

🙅‍♀️ Avoid “just in case” weeing
⏳ Take your time on the toilet
🧘 Relax while emptying your bladder
🥛 Keep drinking fluids

Small changes can make a big difference.

Did you know your bowel health can affect your bladder?

Pelvic health physio Hannah Orr’s top tip for bladder symptoms is to start with the bowels.

For example, constipation can put pressure on the bladder and make urgency or leaks worse.

That’s why pelvic health physios often look at bowel health first:

✅ Supporting regular bowel emptying
✅ Improving stool consistency
✅ Looking at diet and habits

As physios often say: “Empty vessels don’t leak.”

Small daily habits can make a big difference for your bladder and bowel.

This week is Nutrition & Hydration Week (16–22 March), and it’s a good reminder that what we eat and drink matters.

Healthy habits that help:
💧 Drinking enough fluids
🥦 Getting enough fibre
🚶‍♀️ Regular meals and movement

Trying to drink less to avoid the toilet can actually make bladder and bowel symptoms worse.

Looking after your bladder and bowel starts with looking after your whole body 💛
