Autism awareness 🧠♾️

Some of us actually love spinning in circles.

When you live with autism, sensory experiences can be incredibly intense. The world can feel loud, fast, and overwhelming.

But sometimes the very thing people think would overwhelm us can actually be regulating.

Feeling the wind, the movement, the speed while spinning or running in circles can feel incredibly freeing and calming.

For many autistic people, movement like this helps regulate:
• emotions
• behaviour
• the nervous system
• physical energy

What might look unusual to others can actually be a powerful tool for self-regulation.

Autism isn’t one experience.
And sometimes spinning in circles is exactly what the body needs.

Daily marama with Tamara

Maramataka: Korikori Whakapiri 🌙

Sensory experience: low-energy

Date: 10 March

Today is a reminder to slow down and fill up your own cup.

• Korikori Whakapiri is a low energy moon phase
• A good day for rest, self-care, and gentle living

Science also shows something interesting:

• Doing nothing can regulate your nervous system
• Stillness helps shift the body out of fight, flight, or freeze
• It moves the body into a recovery and repair state
• This helps reduce the stress hormone Cortisol
• It activates the Vagus nerve, which helps calm the body

Even boredom can be healing:

• When we stop doing tasks, the brain activates the Default Mode Network
• This is where emotional processing and recovery happens

Today might look like:

• Lying down and resting
• Drinking extra wai
• Nourishing your body with kai
• Reducing stimulation
• Giving yourself permission to do less

Boredom isn’t laziness.
Stillness isn’t unproductive.
It’s nervous system regulation.

Maramataka: Takirau
Date: 06 March
Energy: Balanced, medium energy

Today’s moon phase Takirau brings a steady and balanced energy. It’s a great day to slow down, reflect, and observe your thoughts, behaviours, and attitudes because the small actions we repeat daily shape the future we create.

For neurodivergent people, this can be a supportive day to do manageable tasks like appointments, errands, or shopping, when sensory overwhelm may feel more manageable.

🌿 Gentle Advice for Today

• Spend time reflecting or journaling
• Observe your thoughts, behaviours, and patterns
• Tackle small tasks or appointments
• Do errands while energy feels balanced
• Support your body with nourishing foods
• Add minerals, vitamins, and probiotics for seasonal immunity

With autumn approaching, it’s a good time to strengthen your immune system and support your body through the seasonal shift.

Maramataka: Rākaumatōhe
Date: 05 March
Energy: High, intense, sensory-heightened

Today’s moon phase Rākaumatōhe can bring strong energy to the body and mind. For neurodivergent people, this may show up as sensory overload, panic, overwhelm, or emotional intensity.

When energy is high, grounding and self-care become essential to help regulate the nervous system and stay present.

🌿 Gentle Advice for Today

• Ground yourself (barefoot on the earth or slow breathing)
• Pause when you feel overwhelm building
• Move your body to release excess energy
• Drink water and slow your pace
• Use stressful moments as reminders to return to self-care
• Protect your energy to avoid burnout, seizures, or overload

Even difficult moments — like getting locked out of the house — can remind us to slow down and care for ourselves.

Learning to work with the Maramataka helps us understand our bodies, regulate our nervous system, and move through high-energy days with awareness.
