Living with dysautonomia can be challenging — especially because symptoms can change day to day. Small, practical adjustments can make daily life more manageable and help reduce symptom flare-ups.

Some helpful strategies include:

• Avoid standing or sitting still for long periods of time
• Ask for help when you need it — conserving energy matters
• Create and stick to a calming evening routine
• If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down and raise your feet
• Avoid heat where possible, including hot showers
• Consume alcohol and energy drinks with caution

These aren’t cures — they’re supportive tools that help reduce unnecessary strain on a dysregulated nervous system.

Understanding how your body responds is key to managing symptoms more effectively.

When people with dysautonomia hear “stress”, they’re often dismissed.
But this is what stress actually means.

Stress isn’t just emotional.

For a dysregulated nervous system, many inputs can push the system into overload — even when nothing looks “wrong” on the outside.

Some of the biggest triggers include:
• Emotional stress (worry, overwhelm, sustained anxiety)
• Pain — acute or chronic
• Temperature or weather changes
• Standing upright or changing position
• Physical strain, illness, or overexertion

These aren’t character flaws.
They’re physiological stressors acting on a nervous system that’s already struggling to regulate.

This is why symptoms can flare without warning.
And why “just relax” is rarely helpful advice.

Understanding what the nervous system is reacting to is often the missing piece.

When the explanation finally fits —
and you realise you weren’t failing recovery.

You were missing the right framework.

Lightheadedness.
Palpitations.
Nausea.
Brain fog.
Shortness of breath.
Crushing fatigue.

These symptoms don’t live in isolation.
They often point to dysautonomia — a nervous system that isn’t regulating properly.

Around 70 million people worldwide are affected.
Many are misdiagnosed.
Many are told it’s anxiety, stress, or “just one of those things”.

Because dysautonomia is invisible, people are often told they look fine —
while struggling to work, study, or get through normal daily tasks.

If this list feels uncomfortably familiar, it’s worth getting assessed by someone who understands autonomic dysfunction — not just individual symptoms.

Clarity is the first step.
And being dismissed shouldn’t be part of the process.

Waitangi Day 🇳🇿

Today is a day to pause and reflect - on where we live, the people around us and the shared story of Aotearoa.

It’s a reminder of connection, respect and the ongoing journey we’re all part of together. However you’re spending the day - with whānau, out in nature, or taking a quiet moment - we hope you’re enjoying the day in your own way.

Sending love to this beautiful place we call home 🤍

Neuro Rehab Isn’t Physio — Here’s the Difference

Physio works on muscles.
Neuro rehab works on the brain’s control of muscles.

If your symptoms are:
• dizziness
• balance issues
• visual strain
• coordination issues
• sensory overwhelm
• fatigue
…you need neurological retraining, not strengthening exercises.

When your nervous system is overwhelmed, digestion slows down.
Your body prioritises survival, not gut function.

This is why flare-ups often bring:
• bloating
• nausea
• constipation
• loss of appetite
• stomach pain

The gut responds directly to autonomic stress — and stabilises when the system does.
