When people with dysautonomia hear “stress”, they’re often dismissed.
But this is what stress actually means.
Stress isn’t just emotional.
For a dysregulated nervous system, many inputs can push the system into overload — even when nothing looks “wrong” on the outside.
Some of the biggest triggers include:
• Emotional stress (worry, overwhelm, sustained anxiety)
• Pain — acute or chronic
• Temperature or weather changes
• Standing upright or changing position
• Physical strain, illness, or overexertion
These aren’t character flaws.
They’re physiological stressors acting on a nervous system that’s already struggling to regulate.
This is why symptoms can flare without warning.
And why “just relax” is rarely helpful advice.
Understanding what the nervous system is reacting to is often the missing piece.
