Why Your Lymphatic System Is So Important
(Especially as We Move Into Autumn)
As we move into Autumn, nature begins to slow down and turn inward. Our bodies often feel this shift too — energy may drop slightly, digestion can change, and immunity becomes more important as the cooler months approach.
One system that plays a huge role in how we feel during this seasonal transition is something many people rarely think about:
The lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system is often described as the body’s drainage and cleansing system. It helps remove waste, toxins, excess fluid and immune byproducts from our tissues. It also plays a vital role in immune health, inflammation regulation and overall vitality.
Unlike the heart, which pumps blood through the body, the lymphatic system doesn’t have its own pump. It relies on movement, breathing and daily lifestyle habits to circulate properly.
When lymph flow becomes sluggish, people may experience things like:
• Puffiness or fluid retention
• Feeling heavy or sluggish
• Increased inflammation
• More frequent illness
• Brain fog or fatigue
This is why gentle daily movement, breathwork and circulation practices are so important — especially during seasonal transitions.
The Brain’s Cleansing System
What many people don’t realise is that the brain has its own lymphatic-style drainage system called the glymphatic system.
This system helps clear waste products from the brain, including metabolic byproducts that accumulate throughout the day. It works most effectively when we sleep deeply and when the nervous system is able to move into a parasympathetic (rest and repair) state.
When the glymphatic system is working well, it supports:
• Clear thinking and memory
• Nervous system regulation
• Better sleep quality
• Brain health and longevity
But when we are constantly stressed, sedentary, or not sleeping well, this important cleansing process can become less efficient.
How Traditional Systems of Health Viewed This
Interestingly, long before modern science described the lymphatic or glymphatic systems, traditional healing systems like Ayurveda recognised the importance of maintaining healthy circulation, elimination and cleansing within the body.
In Ayurveda, proper movement of fluids and wastes is essential for maintaining balance and preventing the accumulation of “ama” — a term used to describe metabolic waste or toxins that can build up when digestion, circulation or elimination are impaired.
Autumn is also the season when Vata dosha becomes more dominant. Vata governs movement in the body, including the nervous system and processes of elimination. When Vata becomes imbalanced, people may experience dryness, anxiety, digestive irregularity, poor sleep or feeling scattered and depleted.
Supporting healthy circulation, grounding the nervous system and maintaining gentle daily rhythms becomes especially important at this time of year.
The good news is that small daily practices can make a big difference.
Some simple ways to support lymphatic flow include:
Gentle daily movement
Gentle bouncing (rebounder or gently bounding from standing). Try this before you do any other exercise, your whole body feels better and moves better - less stiffness & tightness.
Breathwork
Deep diaphragmatic breathing acts like a pump for the lymphatic system. 360 breathing, where you focus on ribcage movement in all directions.
Twisting and stretching movements
These help stimulate lymph flow through the torso where many lymph nodes are located.
Good sleep
Deep rest allows the glymphatic system to clear waste from the brain.
Supporting digestion
Warm, nourishing foods and regular meal rhythms help reduce toxic build-up in the body. Resting the digestion with time restricted eating. Feeling full and empty.
Supporting Your Body This Autumn
As we move into the cooler months, it’s a beautiful time to gently reset daily habits and support the systems that keep us healthy, clear and energised.
Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing more tips and insights as I prepare for two seasonal offerings designed to help you do exactly that:
🍂 Autumn Yoga Workshop – March 22
A nourishing session with yoga, meridian-focused movement/poses, breathwork and Yoga Nidra to support the lungs, digestion, lymphatic, immune and nervous system.
🍂 21 Day Autumn Reset – starting March 23
Short daily practices (10–20 minutes) including movement, yoga, breathwork and seasonal dietary guidance to help support the nervous system, lymphatic system, support digestion and boost immunity as we move into Autumn.
If you’d like to learn more about how to support your body during this seasonal shift, keep an eye on the page over the coming days — I’ll be sharing more simple practices you can start using right away.
Your body is always working to keep you healthy. Sometimes it just needs the right conditions and a little support. 🍂
